GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF CLASS
This job is responsible for providing support and assistance to the public service activities of the library. Work is performed under direct supervision. Working hours include nights and weekends.
This position will close after the receipt of the first 25 qualified applicants or 4:00PM on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, whichever comes first.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Main Library:
- Sorts and shelves all types of library materials according to correct shelf classification.
- Performs shelf-reading as assigned, correcting errors as they are found, and shifts materials as needed.
- Answers page calls to retrieve materials for patrons.
- Empties book drop according to schedule.
- Clears abandoned materials from public areas and straightens tables and chairs, keeping areas neat and orderly.
- May be asked to perform light custodial duties.
- Other duties and related tasks as assigned
- May be required to work overtime or alternate hours for the efficient operation of the library.
Branch Library (In addition to duties above):
- Includes Page duties noted above
- May work with the public at the desk: checking materials in and out and processing applications for new cards.
- May handle cash transactions for overdue fines.
- May answer business phone calls.
- Assists with the preparation of crafts for children’s programming
- Maintains photocopiers, printers, and fax machines.
- May be required to work overtime or alternate hours for the efficient operation of the branch.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS:
- Performs related work as required.
QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE)
- Must be 16 years of age and be able to read and write.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES
- Knowledge of Dewey Decimal system.
- Knowledge of computerized library applications and keyboard skills (Branch).
- Knowledge of alphabetical and numerical sequencing.
- Ability to deal with the public efficiently and courteously.
- Ability to take oral and written instruction.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Requires work that involves walking, standing, stooping most of the time, exerting up to 30 pounds of force regularly, and routine keyboard operations.
- The job risks exposure to normal environmental hazards.
- The job requires normal visual acuity, field of vision, hearing, speaking, color perception, sense of smell, depth perception, and texture perception.
