This entry-level engineering work involves learning and performing routine engineering tasks and assisting engineering staff or other professionals in engineering, statistical work, mathematical, contract and construction support, or various other utility-related tasks. This position receives training and performs various technical office and field work in support of City engineering-related activities. Work is performed under the direction of a supervisor or senior engineering technicians and checked upon completion to ensure quality, accuracy, and completeness.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Lakeland Electric)
- Manages a service area with lower-level projects under supervision.
- Designs lighting applications, creates work orders, and inspects contractor work under supervision.
- Learns basic procedures of using Computer Aided Design Software of the Department’s choice to produce maps, drawings, charts, graphs, and related documents.
- Enters data into processing devices using procedures designated by engineers, planners and others.
- Runs programs or executes procedures to obtain the necessary output in proper format.
- Learns to use various software applications to create presentations, collect data, calculate statistical averages, statistical trends, rates of change, and percentages, and plot technical data.
- Prepares cost estimates and invoices for customers.
- Prepares distribution design based on load data and customer needs.
- Performs field checks to verify that electrical conduit and hardware are installed per plans.
- Provides Development Review Team (DRT) comments for new projects.
- Must be able to attend meetings at locations other than primary work location.
- Ability to complete training on the job, college, classroom, and other training as required.
- Ability to complete seminar-type classes as may be identified by the Designated Supervisor, approved by the Division Manager, and subject to course availability.
- Keeps an up-to-date project list to assist in load forecasting.
- Records Redline and lighting installations into GIS.
- Maintains the service engineering mailbox and voicemail.
- May be required to work overtime or alternate hours as necessary for the efficient operation of the department.
- Position designated as Mission Critical by Department Director.
- Collects and organizes data for use and analysis by higher-level technicians or engineers.
- Assists in preparing routine reports, forecasts, studies, legal descriptions, memos, letters, and related activities.
- Learns basic procedures for using Computer-Aided Design Software of the Department's choosing to produce maps, drawings, charts, graphs, and related documents.
- Enter data into processing devices using procedures designated by engineers, planners, and others; run programs or execute procedures to obtain the necessary output in the proper format.
- Learns to use various software applications to create presentations, collect data, calculate statistical averages, statistical trends, rates of change, percentages, and plot technical data.
- Assists with the preparation of cost estimates.
- Learns to use the City's GIS Software and provides maps as the Department requires.
- Learns to read, understand, and interpret plans, legal property descriptions, specifications, technical reports, and engineering drawings.
- Assists with maintaining an efficient filing and records system.
- Assists with procuring goods and services from various vendors.
- May be required to work overtime, or alternate hours, as necessary for the efficient operation of the department.
- Position designated as Mission Critical by Department Director.
- Performs related work as required.
QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE)
- High school diploma from an accredited school or a GED.
- If the applicant does not have sixty (60) hours of accredited college courses in a degree-seeking program, he or she must complete no less than six (6) semester hours of college coursework each year until the requirement is met.
- Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math (STEM) college majors are preferred.
- May be required to complete seminar type courses as may be identified by the Designated Supervisor and approved by the Division Manager and subject to course availability.

- Respiratory Protection Physical.
- Pulmonary Function.
- Qualitative and Quantitative Fit Test(s).
- May be required to maintain asbestos certification.
- Must maintain City driving privileges and must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.

- Must be able to attend meetings at locations other than primary work location.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES
- Knowledge of and familiarity with personal computers, including software applications, computer input/output terminals, microfiche machines, calculators, survey equipment, and other technical devices.
- Knowledge of basic drafting techniques, mathematics, and statistics.
- Ability to perform basic research.
- Ability to understand, follow, and transmit oral and written instructions.
- Ability to perform routine technical computations, make estimates, compile statistical information, and perform analysis.
- Ability to be a self-starter, self-motivated, detail-oriented, and team player and to carry out assignments independently and with minimal supervision.
- Ability to assist in testing programs.
- Ability to learn methods and procedures of cost estimates and evaluations against actual estimates.
- Ability to assist while learning to manage multiple projects and timelines simultaneously while remaining flexible as needed.
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, consultants, other utilities, City employees, and the general public.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with fellow employees and the general public through oral and written communication.
- Knowledge of and familiarity with Maximo, UMS, and Designer software.
- Knowledge and familiarity with Electric Distribution Systems.
- Knowledge and familiarity with electric distribution systems.
- Requires manual labor that involves walking or standing some of the time, exerting up to 50 pounds of force regularly routine keyboard operations, and operating City vehicles.
- Work may include fieldwork as required at various job sites as well as performing job duties in an office, water/wastewater plant, pump stations, pump houses, manholes, vaults, or an outside environment exposed to the elements and traffic.
- The job risks exposure to extreme noise levels, dust, pollen, bright/dim light, extreme hot/cold, wet/humid conditions, fumes, noxious odors, chemicals, sewage, confined spaces, and heights.
- The job requires normal visual acuity, field of vision, hearing, speaking, color perception, sense of smell, depth perception, and texture perception.
