Join the City of Lakeville's Fire Department as a Paid-on-Call Firefighter! You will be responsible for providing skilled fire suppression work and safe and effective operation of fire apparatus.
Paid-on-Call Firefighters will be required to maintain attendance and response minimums as directed by department policy:
- Duty Crew: Firefighters are required to work a minimum of twelve (12) duty crew shifts per quarter.
- Training: Firefighters will attend one (1) training per month.
- On Call: Firefighters will carry a pager and respond to emergency calls.

Informational Meetings
Informational meetings provide an opportunity for you to learn more about the Lakeville Fire Department, responsibilities and requirements of a Paid-on-Call Firefighter. Spouses/significant others are encouraged to attend to understand the time commitments required. There are 2 opportunities to attend a meeting. Attendance at a meeting is encouraged, but not required.
Saturday, May 3, 2025 - 9:00 a.m.
Location: Fire Station 1, 20190 Holyoke Avenue
Written Test - 30 minutes (required)
The written test is used to evaluate general knowledge and competencies as it relates to the Firefighter position.
Date: Saturday, May 17, 2025 - 9:00 a.m.
Location: Fire Station 1, 20190 Holyoke Avenue
This test measures candidates physical abilities as it relates to the Firefighter position. Candidates will receive a walk-through and demonstration prior to beginning their test. Candidates should wear comfortable clothing.
Date: Saturday, June 7, 2025 - 9:00 AM to Noon
Location: Fire Station 1, 20190 Holyoke Avenue
Interview (required)
Following successful completion of the written and physical agility tests, candidates will be invited to interviews.
Date: TBD, week of June 16, 2025
Location: Fire Station 4, 9465 185th Street West
Selected candidates will complete the following pre-employment testing: background check, medical assessment and psychological assessment.
The tentative start date for Paid-on-Call Firefighters is August 11, 2025.
*Current non-exempt City employees are not eligible to apply for Paid-on-Call Firefighter positions.
- Performs all assigned firefighter duties in accordance with common practices and department guidelines.
- Responds to emergency calls, renders aid to victim(s) as required in accordance with department policy.
- Responds to emergency calls with proper equipment quickly and safely.
- Conducts themselves in a safe and efficient manner.
- Cleans up and ensures equipment readiness.
- Assists in inspecting, maintaining, and repairing, as necessary, all fire related equipment.
- Completes proper checklists and reports damaged and improperly functioning equipment.
- Maintains facilities and performs housekeeping duties as directed.
- Assists in fire prevention duties and fire prevention education, etc.
- Conducts station tours for the public, schools, and community demonstrations and programs.
- Maintains and improves rescue and firefighting skills. Attends training sessions, studies material on fire hazards and firefighting or rescue methods and maintains familiarity with city streets and all department equipment. May be requested to conduct training based on topic expertise.
- Keeps a Fire officer advised of fire suppression developments and performs other duties as apparent or assigned.
- Duty Crew: Work a minimum of twelve (12) duty crew shifts per quarter as required by department policy.
- Training: Attend one (1) training per month as required by department policy.
- Pay per Call: Responds to assigned station when notified or to duty shifts as required by department policy.
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- 18 years of age on appointment date.
- Must successfully complete an initial written exam, initial and annual physical ability test, medical examination, psychological assessment and background check.
- Must possess valid Minnesota driver's license.
- Must reside within a two (2) mile radius of a Lakeville fire station upon application.
Physical Demands
- Normal vision needed with or without correction. Requires both near and far acuity.
- Must be able to communicate effectively to others.
- Must be able to frequently lift and/or move up to 60 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 115 pounds.
- Must be able to drag an object weighing 115 lbs. or more.
- Walking and/or other mobility:
- Must be able to walk or crawl while carrying or lifting.
- Must be able to ascend and descend stairs or ladders.
- Must be able to balance and have the ability to steady oneself and keep from falling.
- Must be capable of reaching (extend the hands or arms in any direction); capable of utilizing both gross and fine muscle functions for the handling (seizing, holding, grasping, turning or otherwise working with the hands); fingering (picking, pinching, or otherwise working with the fingers); and feeling (perceiving attributes of objects such as size, shape, temperature, or texture by means of receptors in skin, particularly those of the fingertips).
- Must be able to multiply, divide, use fractions and read graphs (fire pump operations).
- Must be able to read textbooks.
- Must be able to interpret instructions and use logic to solve problems.
- Demonstrated ability and knowledge to perform precarious fire suppression techniques and operate fire service equipment. Maintains firefighter skills.
- Successfully passes periodic cardiovascular fitness evaluation, respiratory function test, and physical ability evaluation as prescribed by Fire Department standards.
- Active participation in fire department activities.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective and continuing working relationships with other department members and the general public.
- Successful completion of required fire service training as prescribed by fire department policy.
- Must meet call percentage and training requirements per department policy.
- Remains physically fit and capable to perform strenuous work under adverse conditions.
- Successful completion of two (2) year probation period.
- Must complete the following required training courses within established probationary period:
- NFPA 1001 Firefighter I
- NFPA 1001 Firefighter II
- Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) or higher
- NFPA 472 Hazmat Operations Certification
- Complete National Incident Management System (N.I.M.S.) courses ICS 100, 200, 700 and 800.
- Training course to be completed after probationary period
- Fire Apparatus Operator – Basic
- Water Rescue Orientation
