The Recreation and Community Services Department is seeking energetic, enthusiastic and responsible candidates to fill summer seasonal positions. Incumbents will work a varied schedule throughout the period of May 12 - September 28, 2025 (2025 Aquatic Season) . This is an at-will position and the incumbent serves at the pleasure of the City Manager or designee.

Examples of Duties
Duties may include, but are not limited to the following : Teach the full range of Red Cross swim instruction and special interest classes; evaluate progress of swim students both orally and in writing; produce written records of class participation; help plan and supervise special aquatic events; enforce facility regulations and policies; conduct chemical tests of water; rescue swimmers in danger of drowning; administer first aid to patrons as needed; receive fees for swimming pool activities; perform routine maintenance to pool and aquatic equipment; assist in cleaning pool facility areas as needed.
Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities : Must possess knowledge of effective teaching techniques, safety standards, communication and public relations skills, the ability to be vocally assertive with a strong voice.
Certifications : American Red Cross Lifeguard Training for the Professional Rescuer (Lifeguard / CPR / AED), First Aid for Public Safety Personnel (Title 22), Water Safety Instructor (WSI), Bloodborne Pathogens, and Oxygen Administration. Please note : Candidates selected for hire can obtain the American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification, First Aid for Public Safety Personnel (Title 22), Bloodborne Pathogens, and Oxygen Administration certifications through the city upon hire . If candidate is unable to attend the provided courses offered through the city, they will be required to obtain the certifications on their own at their own expense. The Water Safety Instructor Certification must be obtained at the candidate's own expense.
Physical and Mental Demands / Environmental Exposures : Ability to work in outdoor environment with exposure to heat and sun; ability to swim and lift, push and pull to rescue children and adults; ability to hear cries for assistance, splashing and sounds from a distance of 50 yards; ability to see area of responsibility and read charts, thermometers, gauges and reports.

SELECTION PROCEDURE : All properly submitted applications will be reviewed and evaluated. Those candidates appearing to have the best qualifications for the position will be invited to participate further in the examination process. The examination process may require a combination of performance evaluation and oral interviews. Not all applicants may be invited to test or interview. In-water skill evaluations are scheduled to be conducted on Saturday, April 12, 2025 at 10 : 00 a.m. at Mayfair Pool. Additional testing dates may become available. Candidates who successfully pass the in-water skill evaluation may be invited to participate in an oral interview; interviews are scheduled for later that afternoon at Mayfair Pool. For additional information on the in-water skill evaluation, specific hiring requirements, test dates and training dates please refer to the recruitment brochure or go to www.lakewoodcity.org / jobs Additional in-water skill evaluation dates / times may be available at a later date. Selected candidates must submit a certificate documenting that within the last two years he / she has been examined and found to be free of communicable tuberculosis to the Recreation Department by the date of hire. COMPENSATION : City employees are paid on a bi-weekly basis, therefore, published monthly salary is for illustration purposes only, rounded to whole dollars. Actual salary is based on hourly rate rounded to four decimal places.

RESTRICTIONS ON NEPOTISM : The employment of relatives can create undesirable results, particularly in connection with performance evaluation, discipline, and general morale of other workers. Therefore, it is the city's policy that no relative of any City officer or employee to which this resolution applies shall be employed, if said City officer or employee is in a supervisory, lead or subordinate position over said relative in the areas of hiring, setting compensation, discipline or termination. "Relatives" for this purpose include son, daughter, mother, father, brother, brother-in-law, sister, sister-in-law, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, mother-in-law, father-in-law, aunt, uncle, nephew, niece, stepparent, stepchild, grandparent, grandchild, or persons living in the same household. PHYSICAL EXAMINATION : Employment offers are conditional, based upon the successful completion of a medical examination which includes drug and alcohol screening for safety-sensitive positions. Candidates are cautioned not to quit their jobs or give notice to their current employer until they are determined to be medically qualified.
TUBERCULOSIS TESTING : Candidates selected to work in a position requiring contact with children must submit a certificate or notice documenting that within the last two years they have been examined and found to be free of communicable tuberculosis. POSSESSION OF A VALID CALIFORNIA DRIVER'S LICENSE : Employees in classifications requiring possession of a valid California driver's license will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice program, which confirms possession of a valid driver's license and reflects the driving record.
LOYALTY OATH OR AFFIRMATION : All City employees are required to sign a loyalty oath or affirmation prior to actual employment.
EMERGENCY SERVICE : All City employees are required to perform assigned Emergency Service duties in the event of an emergency or disaster.
PROBATIONARY PERIOD : Employees appointed to positions in the classified service are required to serve a probationary period of not less than six months. All other employees are considered at-will and serve at the pleasure of the appointing authority.
Part time employees are eligible to participate in the City's alternate retirement plan. The City does not participate in Social Security. Part time employees are not eligible to participate in any other benefit programs except as may be required by law.
