Job Summary

Performs Court Marshal duties, including operation of security equipment such as magnetometer, X-ray, and hand-held wands, transporting prisoners, serving subpoenas, citations and other orders to persons involved in Court cases, effecting arrests within the Municipal Court area, handling firearms with proficiency and safety, and dealing with potentially dangerous situations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Incumbent is accountable for all duties of this job and other projects and responsibilities may be added at the City's discretion. Employees must be able to perform the essential duties of this job with or without a reasonable accommodation.

  • Maintains order and provides security for all sessions in the courtroom and hallways of Municipal Court.
  • Operates Court security equipment. Screens individuals who enter the Court area and Public Safety Center.
  • Ensures site setup and establishes security for all Off-Site Specialty Courts.
  • Executes municipal warrants within the City of Lakewood. Arrests persons on active warrants. Proofreads new warrants, updates information in warrant files, cancels active warrants when party appears or is arrested. Updates Niche and Ecourt for cancelled warrants to prevent false arrests.
  • Transports prisoners in custody on Lakewood Municipal violations, and felony holds, to and from Municipal Court, county jails, and detention facilities.
  • Assists Lakewood Police by transporting felons from detention facilities to Jefferson County Jail.
  • Backs up / assists Police in non-emergency or emergency situations when called upon.
  • Investigates bad checks written to Municipal Court.
  • Picks up and deliver bonds and summonses. Delivers paperwork to District Court, and / or Public Defenders' Office.
  • Enters Municipal Court warrants into court computer; enters restraining orders and area of restriction orders from the Lakewood Municipal Court into CCIC.
  • Provides information or assistance in apprehending suspects with other law enforcement agencies.
  • Receives bond payments as an agent for the court; prepares paperwork.
  • Serves subpoenas, citations or restraining orders to persons called into Municipal Court as witnesses or defendants.
  • Generates prisoner video list for Jeffco and Lakewood Municipal Court Judges and staff.
  • Operates NCIC / CCIC computer; updates and runs criminal histories on all penal summonses cited into Municipal Court, runs driver's license histories.
  • Operates a law enforcement vehicle safely in non-emergency situations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Reporting Relationships

Supervision Received : Receives general supervision from the Chief Court Marshal.

Supervision Exercised : None.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to qualify with duty weapon and maintain firearms qualification (.357 Magnum, 9 mm, .40, or .45). Knowledge of the use and care of firearms and the ability to understand and use appropriate levels of force, based on specific circumstances.
  • Knowledge of Federal, State, and County codes and ordinances relating to law enforcement. Ability to read and understand departmental policies, rules, instructions, laws and ordinances.
  • Ability to remain alert and carefully observe situations in the courtroom, hallways, magnetometer and surrounding environment, especially when transporting prisoners.
  • Possesses sound judgment and ability to recognize situations of potential danger.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral direction.
  • Integrity and the ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Ability to be assertive and exert control over belligerent, distressed or abusive persons, when necessary.
  • Ability to control prisoners individually and in groups on a fair and impartial basis.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with others from diverse economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Ability to handle abuse, both verbal and physical, when dealing with hostile suspects and others encountered in antagonistic environments.
  • Ability to pass a polygraph examination, oral board interview, psychological examination, pre-placement physical, and physical abilities test.
  • Requires attending in-service training, as well as classes in specific subjects at the Lakewood Police Academy that are relevant to the Court Marshal position and as determined by the Chief Court Marshal.
  • Requires regular and prompt attendance.
  • Technological Skills

  • Computer skills and knowledge of software programs.
  • Education and Experience

  • Education : High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience : Preferred qualifications include evidence of continuing education or training in law enforcement field, Bilingual (English / Spanish-speaking), and two years P.O.S.T. law enforcement experience.
  • Certification / Licenses / Specialized Training

  • Current Colorado P.O.S.T. certification.
  • Valid driver's license and good driving record
  • Must successfully complete and maintain required state or departmental physical standards and certifications.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    Must be able to lift 40 pounds from ground to standing position

    Vision test

Employees are also expected to encourage safe work practices by all co-employees, and to report any unsafe work practices immediately to a supervisor.

    Pay Range

    35.61-$46.23

    Background and reference checks will be conducted for all regular and some variable / seasonal positions.
