JOB SUMMARY

Under the general supervision of the Operations Superintendent or designee, the incumbent works in a seasonal job assignment assisting in the maintenance of city parks and facilities, street landscaping, and city streets; and uses related hand tools and power tools to perform work.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Seasonal Parks/Janitorial
Open and close parks and facilities as needed.
Clean restrooms.
Empty trash cans.
Perform routine maintenance of park equipment such as trash cans, tables, benches, etc.
Inspect parks and remove debris and obstructions manually.
Mow turf using a walk behind mower.
Edge, trim and maintain planter areas, structures and pathways.
Remove graffiti from structures.
Clean gutters.
Dig trenches for irrigation systems.
Assist in trimming trees and bushes.
Assist in applying fertilizers.
Perform related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
A high school diploma or GED. Must be at least 18 years of age. Prior experience in parks maintenance, landscape maintenance or street maintenance is desirable.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid Washington State driver's license by hire date.
Work schedule may include working on weekends, evenings and holidays.
Satisfactory physical condition as evidenced by a City approved medical examination.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

KNOWLEDGE OF:
Park operations and maintenance procedures.
Work hazards and applicable safety precautions.
Safe usage and operation of landscape maintenance tools and equipment.
Requirements of maintaining tools and equipment in a safe, clean and orderly condition.
Safety standards and precautions.
Interpersonal skills using respect, tact, patience and courtesy.
ABILITY TO:
Perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time under varying weather conditions.
Walk for extended periods of time on uneven ground.
Work independently in and around street right-of-ways.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
Follow written and/or verbal instruction.
Climb ladders and work at heights.
Document work performed.
Operate hand tools, power tools and lawn maintenance equipment.
Perform basic maintenance of equipment.
Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Walk, kneel, stand and crouch.
Lift objects up to 50 pounds.
Perform the physical demands of the work including walking, climbing, lifting heavy loads and manipulating equipment.
Observe legal and defensive driving practices.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
ENVIRONMENT:
Indoor and outdoor work environment; subject to seasonal heat and cold or adverse weather conditions, and driving a vehicle in the course of conducting work.
PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate assigned equipment; lifting up to 50 pounds; standing, walking, kneeling, crouching, climbing and overall movement; carrying, pushing or pulling; hearing and speaking to communicate with others to exchange information.
HAZARDS:
Regularly works near moving mechanical parts. Exposure to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and vibration. Occasional exposure to risk of electrical shock. The noise level is usually loud.


All temporary and seasonal workers with the City are employed at will. Either party may terminate the employment relationship at any time with or without cause, and for any lawful reason or for no reason.

Paid interns shall receive holiday pay. Employees in grant funded positions are eligible for paid holidays if specified in the grant.

Temporary and seasonal employees are not eligible for any other benefits except those mandated by law, such as paid sick leave, workers' compensation, and unemployment coverage.
