PAY RANGE : $15.08-$19.76 / hr

Under general supervision from the Paha Director and the Assistant Director, with direct supervision from the Program Lead. Camp Paha Program Aids assist Program Leads with the day to day needs of the campers in their groups. This includes engaging with campers during planned activities, ensuring a safe and fun environment, and assisting with activities of daily living such as feeding, changing, and bathroom care.

The City of Lakewood is currently recruiting variable employees for this position. A variable employee is an at-will employee who works in a seasonal or temporary capacity. Their work schedule is based on business need. This position would be a part-time non benefitted position.

MAJOR TASKS, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES (This job description does not intend to list every function of the position).

Essential Job Functions :

  • Perform job in a professional manner, i.e. dress appropriately, arrive on time, stay until the end of your shift, attend all appropriate staff meetings, and staff orientation.
  • Participate and engage in all camp activities with campers.
  • Demonstrate camp spirit and encourage a positive camp culture among peers and campers
  • Maintain an enthusiastic attitude and serve as a role model on a daily basis.
  • Assist with planning and leading small and large group activities for campers during scheduled group times, transitions or other down times.
  • Comply with required camp ratios.
  • Ensure the health, well-being and safety of all campers, participants and staff, abide by and enforce City of Lakewood's policies and procedures including the "No Isolated Moments" policy.
  • Follow all Child Care License standards as set forth by Paha Director and those respective agencies.
  • Assist leadership team with the supervision of campers.
  • Maintain the cleanliness of all areas and facilities used by campers and staff on a daily basis.
  • Assist the leadership team by keeping your group on time and on schedule.
  • Be knowledgeable of any special camper needs, including health & behavioral.
  • Be familiar with City of Lakewood policies and procedures and adhere to those procedures.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Specific Job Functions

  • Supervising, caring, and facilitating activities for campers in Camp Care occurring before or after regular camp hours.
  • Participate in all activities with campers to ensure the full participation and enjoyment of camp activities.
  • Ensure group safety at all times in all aspects of camp.
  • When assigned to a camper group, support the daily maintenance of your group's home base room (i.e. dump trash, hang up swim things, vacuum your room, tidy up camper things). Also help maintain the commons areas : lunch room, playground, front grounds, buses used by your group, etc.
  • Attend mandatory pre-camp Staff training as well weekly staff meetings.
  • Responsible for your group staying on time and on schedule.
  • Assist campers with all of their daily personal needs at camp.
  • Assist Head Counselors with written weekly progress notes including camper goals, activities, and behaviors.
  • Communicate with parents regarding camper behaviors, schedule changes and other pertinent information.
  • Hours of Work

    Weekdays 8 : 30am-4 : 30pm

  • Supports Campers at all times in program participation.
  • Provides suggestions for future Paha activities / programs.
  • Works as a part of team by supporting others and taking initiative.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Organizational Relationships

    Supervision Received :

  • Receives general supervision from Paha Director and Camp Paha Assistant Director.
  • Supervision Given :

  • Counselors in Training (if directed by Program Lead)
  • Volunteers (if directed by Program Lead)
  • Essential Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

  • Experience caring for and patience to work with people with disabilities ages 6-25yrs.
  • Experience or background in school, public health, camps, or working with people with disabilities is beneficial.
  • Ability to problem solve and work with staff members.
  • Must be able to clear TRAILS Registry prior to the first day of work.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, participants, parents and caregivers.
  • Possess ability in leadership and organization.
  • Ability to respond to questions from groups, managers, participants, customers, and the general public.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and in a timely fashion with participants, families and caregivers, both verbally and non-verbally.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of situations in a professional manner.
  • Ability to interpret and understand instructions, both written and oral.
  • Education

  • Some High school
  • Required Certifications

  • Current CPR and First Aid Certifications (training provided upon hire)
  • Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Must be 16 years of age or older.
  • Ability to interact with participants in an appropriate manner.
  • Ability to supervise participants and redirect negative behaviors as needed.
  • Ability to give clear verbal direction to groups of 5 or more.
  • Ability to motivate and work with individuals of all ability types.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to deal effectively with emergency situations.
  • Ability to provide direction and supervision to volunteers.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and written.
  • Ability to be flexible in work schedule.
  • Background check is required.
  • Physical and Mental Requirements

    Lifting or Carrying :

  • Must be able to safely lift / pull / push (with assistance) weight of up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to perform or assist in participant transfers in varying situations.
  • Pushing and Pulling :

  • Ability to manipulate program supplies as needed.
  • Ability to push / pull participants using various assistive devices.
  • Body Positions / Movements :

  • Ability to stand, walk, run, sit, bend, stoop, squat, twist, and reach for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to perform and assist with activities of daily living with participants.
  • Hearing :

  • Must be able to communicate with staff and participants via phone and in person.
  • Vision :

  • Must be able to instruct, observe, and demonstrate all program aspects.
  • Must be able to recognize and prevent / redirect potentially-risky behaviors.
  • Must be able to perform basic office functions.
  • Mathematics :

  • Must have basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division skills for compiling reports.
  • Must have basic accounting skills to ensure a fiscally sound program.
  • Remembering :

  • Must remember participants' names and abilities, follow-up with participants, parents, staff, and recall how to respond to emergency situations.
  • Must remember policies and procedures and apply them accordingly.
  • Must meet deadlines.
  • Language Ability :

  • Must be able to read accurately.
  • Must be able to compose accurately and grammatically correct documents, letters, signs and memos.
  • Must be able to demonstrate logic and verbally communicate.
  • Reasoning :

  • Must be able to demonstrate good judgment and assessment of skills.
  • Must be able to demonstrate sound decision making skills and be reactive to the needs of the participants in providing intervention to injury.
  • Work Environment

  • The work environment varies by location of event, class or outing. Times of events, classes or outings vary as well.
