The City of Lancaster is seeking qualified applicants for a Fitter position in the Gas Department.
The Fitter position within the Lancaster Municipal Gas Department is a semi-skilled, entry-level role that plays a vital part in the installation, maintenance, and repair of the gas distribution system. This position requires a strong commitment to safety, teamwork, and community service. Supervision is provided by the General Manager, Operations Manager, Construction Supervisor, Crew Leader, or Fitter-in-Charge through a combination of written work orders and oral instructions. Work is subject to inspection during progress and upon completion, ensuring adherence to safety and operational standards.
- Perform tasks related to the installation, maintenance, and repair of the gas distribution system.
- Adhere to safety protocols and use personal protective equipment (PPE) while participating in safety training.
- Accurately identify pipe sizes and fittings, ensuring proper installation and compliance with standards.
- Conduct pressure tests for leak detection and restore gas services to customers promptly.
Essential Functions:
- Field Operations
- Perform general labor tasks related to gas pipeline installation, including excavation and site preparation.
- Ensure efficient and effective completion of assigned tasks.
- Understand and manage various grades of ditch fill material based on project specifications.
- Accurately identify pipe sizes and fittings, ensuring proper installation and compliance with standards.
- Become familiar with and maintain various equipment, ensuring proper operation.
- Utilize a smartphone or laptop to obtain or gather information.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support the mission of the Lancaster Municipal Gas Department.
- Safety Compliance and Protocol
- Participate in safety training and briefings to stay updated on best practices.
- Erect traffic safety signs and monitor site conditions to mitigate risks.
- Adhere to random drug and alcohol testing regulations and maintain a drug-free workplace.
- Follows all safety precautions. This includes being able to wear protective clothing and equipment which includes but is not limited to: Hardhat, Safety Glasses, hearing protection, fire resistant clothing, and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).
- Community and Customer Interactions
- Communicate effectively with the public and other city departments.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Possession of a valid State of Ohio Class A CDL driver’s license (must be obtained within the employees’ probationary period), and continued insurability with the City of Lancaster’s vehicle insurance policy.
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and to navigate difficult terrain as required for field operations.
- Willingness to work outside of regular business hours, including weekends, holidays, and during emergency situations, to ensure reliable gas service to the Lancaster community.
- Knowledge of Lancaster or similar municipal settings is preferred, as it enhances understanding of the unique challenges and community values that Lancaster Municipal Gas prioritizes.
- Must have a permanent residence that is within thirty driving minutes of the City of Lancasters city limits.
