Utility Operator

Responsible for operation of mowers, small dump trucks, tractors and related automotive equipment and, occasionally, heavy equipment; performs manual labor as assigned and may supervise employees assigned as helpers.

• Follows safe practices in the performance of duties.
• Operates light automotive vehicles, dump trucks, riding mowing tractors, and other power driven equipment that are less than 26,000 GVW.
• Drives pick-up trucks and other light automotive equipment.
• Drives dump truck to haul soil, sand, mulch, debris or other materials. 
• Operates a truck mounted snowplow and other snow removal equipment.
• Operates skid loaders in general maintenance work and snow removal.
• Performs related manual labor work in all parks and grounds maintenance activities.
• Operates small sweeper in the clean-up of sidewalks, hard court surfaces and parking lots..
• Operates riding power mowers in the cutting of grass.
• Assists with maintenance and repair of rain gardens and storm water projects.

Education, Training and Experience

• Graduation from High School or completion of a GED is required.
• One (1) year experience in the operation of motorized landscaping equipment is required.

Licenses and Certificates

• Possession of a current valid PA driver’s license is required.

• Knowledge of safe practices related to Public Works.
• Knowledge of the operation of specialized mowing equipment and parks and grounds maintenance equipment is required.
• Some knowledge of the methods and techniques of automotive equipment operations is required.
• Some knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions in operating equipment is required.
• Some knowledge of the geography of the City is highly desirable.
• Ability to make minor repairs, adjustments and service to operating equipment.
• Ability to operate a vehicle on private and public streets is required.
• Proven ability to work well under pressure and to maintain positive interactions is required.
• Positive interpersonal skills are required.
• Proven ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment is required.
• Proven ability to read, write, speak and comprehend English is required.

Safety Equipment Used or Needed

• Personal Protective Equipment such as hardhats, gloves, safety glasses, ear protection, rain gear, steel toed safety shoes, rain boots and respirators.

Comments 

• Requires standing, bending, walking and sitting and climbing in the performance of duties up to eight (8) or more hours a day.
• Works around motorized or moving equipment and machinery.
• Requires working long hours and must be available to handle emergency situations after hours, weekends and holidays.
• Requires heavy manual lifting up to 80 lbs.
• Requires the use of hand tools for shoveling and sweeping.
• Requires the use of air tools, hydraulic tools, and/or electric tools such as jackhammers, pavement saws, tampers.
• Requires performance of duties occasionally under unfavorable weather conditions.
