Police Officer Recruit is for non-certified applicants. Candidates who are hired will be sent to the 17-week Mid-Michigan Police Academy, a certified law enforcement academy, located at Lansing Community College. Upon successful completion of this academy, the Recruit will be promoted to entry-level police officer and must also successfully complete the Lansing Police Department's field training officer program.

The Lansing Police Officer protects and serves the citizens and communities of the City of Lansing. Under general supervision, performs a wide variety of duties involving the enforcement of laws and the prevention of crimes; controls traffic flow and enforces state and local traffic regulations; issues citations; participates in and conducts a variety of criminal investigations; makes arrests; provides support and assistance to special crime prevention and law enforcement programs; and performs a variety of technical and administrative tasks in support of law enforcement services and activities.

Requirements :

  • Must be 21 years of age at the time of graduation from the academy
  • High School Diploma / GED
  • AND Associate Degree (preferred) OR completion of 24 semester credit (or term equivalency) hours of college level coursework, OR current Military Commitment preparing their exit in Good Standing OR completion of commitment to the military in Good Standing. Some Military Course Credits may be used for equivalency.
  • A minimum of one (1) year or more equivalent life experience such as : employment, internship, coaching, volunteerism, and / or etc.
  • Possess good moral character as determined by a favorable, comprehensive, and extensive background investigation covering school and employment records, home environment, and personal traits and integrity
  • Honorably discharged USA Armed Forces Veteran (copy of DD-214 must be included in application packet), if apply
  • Available to work nights, weekends, holidays, and on an overtime basis
  • Must be a US Citizen at time of hire
  • Possess a valid Driver's License at time of employment with a satisfactory driving record
  • Ability to pass a background investigation and no pending or past felony convictions
  • Ability to pass psychological evaluation
  • Meet physical standards as determined by the City's Medical Doctor
  • Physical Requirements : This position requires the individual through assistance or on their own to perform the following actions : standing, walking, running, climbing, jumping, crawling, dragging heavy objects / persons, lifting, pulling, pushing, listening, speaking, twisting, turning, bending, crouching, hearing no lower than 35 dB HL in each ear, color vision, and visual acuity without correction must be at least 20 / 100 in each eye with a binocular vision of 20 / 100, correctable to at least 20 / 20 in each eye with lenses.

  • 3. Michigan Commission of Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES)

    You are encouraged to complete the two required MCOLES tests. These tests are required for attendance to any Michigan Police Academy or to become a Certified Police Officer in the State of Michigan. The Reading & Writing Test (Passing results for the Lansing Police Department are an A or B Band, test results never expire) and the Physical Fitness Test (Must be taken within 180 days (6 months) of the start of the training academy session. Tests results greater than 180 days from academy start date are not valid). These tests should be scheduled as soon as possible, dates and times throughout the State of Michigan fill up quickly. MCOLES r esults must be submitted by Friday, APRIL 18, 2025

  • Required : Reading & Writing Test :
  • Visit , hit, standards & training tab, then, under testing information section hit, reading & writing test.

  • Band A or Band B will be accepted as passing only
  • Cost to take this test is $72.00
  • Copy of results must be submitted to Human Resources Dept. Attention : Kesha McKitty
  • Required : Physical Fitness Test :
  • First take the Physician Health Screening Form to your physician to fill out (Not required by HR until MCOLES PT is scheduled)

  • Then take this completed form with you to your MCOLES Physical Fitness Test
  • Visit , hit, standards & training tab, then, under testing information section hit, physical fitness test.
  • Only a "passing" result will be accepted
  • Cost to take this test is no more than $55.00

  • Copy of results must be submitted to Human Resources Dept. Attention : Kesha McKitty
  • Test is valid for 180 days, take test only within the 180 days from the start of the Police Academy to avoid retake
  • NOTE : MCOLES results are due by Friday, April 18, 2025
  • 4. College transcripts and credits :

  • Request your College / University to send an Official Transcript in a sealed envelope mailed directly from the College to the City of Lansing Department of Human Resources, 8th floor, 124 W. Michigan Ave., Lansing, Michigan 48933, Attn : Kesha McKitty OR they can be sent electronically through a secure website from the College or University.
  • Please submit proof of request receipt from the college / university with application packet.
  • NOTE : It is recommended that you turn in required documentation as you complete them rather than wait. A file will be generated with documentations turned in, once file is complete, you will be contacted with next steps. Candidates that only turn in application, resume and cover letter will not be considered until all other required documentations are turned in.

    SALARY

  • 20.00 / hr while in the Police Academy.
  • Current salary after Academy : $56,629.41-$80,933.44, maximum pay reached in 5 years.
  • Vest bonus : $1,000 annually in addition to salary.
  • Longevity : Annual payments per years of service :
  • 5-10 years : $400

  • 10-15 years : $800
  • 15-20 years : $1,200
  • 20 years : $1,600
  • Clothing allowance : 2% or 4% pay increase based on certain assignments.
  • Shift differential : Increased pay for working noon or night shifts.
  • Overtime : Countless overtime opportunities (bar district, CATA, parades, events, etc)
  • Education hiring bonus : Candidates with a Bachelor's Degree start at Step 2 on the salary scale ($60,912.94), Master's Degree start at Step 3 ($65,640.36).
  • RETIREMENT

  • Pension : Defined benefit pension.
  • Eligible to retire at 25 years of service and 50 years of age.

  • 3.0 multiplier of base wage (75% at 25 years of service).
  • Additional 1% allowance for years 25-30 for a maximum of 80% of base wage.
  • Employee pension contributions are 10% of wages on pensionable items only (10% pension contribution is NOT deducted from overtime payments).
  • Deferred Compensation : 457 plans offered by the City via VOYA and T. Rowe Price.
  • RETIREMENT HEALTHCARE

  • MERS Health Savings Account : Employee contributes 3% and the City contributes 4% of base wages annually. Vesting is five (5) years of service.
  • TIME OFF / SCHEDULES

  • Sick time :
  • 12 days annually (96 hours).

    Up to 4 days (32 hours) of unused sick leave paid annually per Collective Bargaining Agreement details.

  • Up to 90 days (720 hours), paid upon retirement.
  • Personal time : 40 hours annually.
  • Vacation time :
  • 1-5 years : 96 hours

  • 5-10 years : 104 hours
  • 10-15 years : 136 hours
  • 15-20 years : 176 hours
  • 20 years : 192 hours
  • Compensatory time : 1.5 hours for each overtime hour. Maximum accrual 120 hours.
  • Holidays : 13 paid Holidays per year.
  • Bereavement : 5 days paid for death of immediate family member / spouse's family member. 1 day paid for non-immediate family members.
  • Scheduling : Officers bid for their work schedules every 6 weeks.
  • 10-hour shifts (Patrol).

  • Health Insurance : Coverage under either Blue Cross Blue Shield or PHP. Employees on the Base plan will receive a $400 cash bonus annually.
  • Base : $40.00 co-pay for office visits. Prescription drug co-pays are $10 / $40 / $80. $1000 / single and $2000 / family in network deductible and 80% co-insurance. Emergency room service $250 and Urgent Care $60 co-pays.

  • Option 1 : $30.00 co-pay for office visits. Prescription drug co-pays are $10 / $40 / $80. $500 / single and $1000 / family in network deductible and 80% co-insurance. Emergency room service $150 and Urgent Care visit $50 co-pays.
  • Option 2 : $10.00 co-pay for office visits, Urgent Care co-pay $20.00 and Emergency Room co-pay $50.00 (waived in admitted to the hospital). Prescription drugs co-pays are $5.00 generic / $20.00 name brand co-payment / $40.00 non-formulary, with a mandatory generic drug plan program.
  • Opt Out : Employees can opt out of the City's health care plan if they have coverage from another source. Payments are based on bargaining unit member participation :
  • Less than 20 members $1,500, 20 or more members $2,500. Paid annually.

  • Vision : Blue Cross / Blue Shield VSP. Includes vision exams with a $5.00 co-pay and lenses and frames coverage with a $10.00 co-pay once every twelve months.
  • Dental Insurance : No premium, coverage includes employee and family, $1,200 maximum for Class I, II, & III benefits and $3,000 orthodontic maximum.
  • Delta Dental- 100% coverage for cleaning; 50% coverage for treatment costs with an $1,200 maximum per person per contract year. Employees and dependents will also receive orthodontic coverage which provides fifty percent (50%) of treatment costs with a $3,000.00 lifetime maximum per person.

  • Midwestern Dental Plan - Coverage includes 100% coverage for cleaning, oral exams, and biannual x-rays. Other services with co-payments.

  • Employees can pay for medical expenses / dependent care with pretax dollars through AFLAC. AFLAC also offers supplemental insurances that may be purchased on a pretax basis through payroll deduction.

  • Education Reimbursement : Employees may receive up to five hundred ($500) dollars per fiscal year for tuition expenses for approved courses.
