What are the responsibilities and job description for the Seasonal Solid Waste Back Up Operator position at City of Lansing Public Service Department?
The Public Service Department's Operation and Maintenance Division is seeking to fill Seasonal Back-up Solid Waste Operator positions. This position provides assistance with the collection of refuse, recyclables and compost throughout the City. We encourage and welcome individuals to join our team of dedicated individuals committed to ensuring accurate and timely pick- ups.
Employees will work up to 40 hours/week April to December with possible recall to work year after year
After successfully completing the Solid Waste Training Program, employee may be eligible for a salary increase to $23.15 per hour.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Operates a motorized vehicle up to 35 feet in length, of either the recycle or refuse packer model, while standing inside the driver’s cab which is located on the right side of the vehicle.
- Picks up refuse bags and bundles of yard waste and deposits materials in the side of the vehicle.
- Picks up City recycle carts.
- Picks up City refuse carts and empties them in the side of the packer.
- May operate a bulk item collection truck which requires the ability to lift and move furniture, appliances and other large items.
- Washes and cleans vehicles daily, inside and out.
- Participates in a preventative maintenance program by maintaining packers and other solid waste vehicles.
- Completes daily log, trip and inspection sheets by recording hand-written information regarding work activities.
- Use tablet to complete service requests and/or work orders utilizing our asset management software Cityworks.
Ideal candidates will possess the following:
- High School Diploma or GED
- State of Michigan Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Group B, with Air Brakes (CDL-A preferred)
- One (1) year of experience performing heavy manual labor tasks
- One (1) year of experience operating a packer truck preferred
Special Requirements:
- Applicant selected to fill this position may be required as a condition of employment, to participate in an employer paid Hepatitis B inoculation program.
- MDOT Drug & Alcohol Training
- Ability to pass the Solid Waste Training Program within forty five (45) days of start date.
- May require overtime or shift work for snow and ice control operations and other emergencies.
Physical Requirements:
This position requires the individual through assistance or on their own to hear, walk, climb, sit, stand, reach, bend, stoop, push, pull, carry, and have visual acuity and the ability to lift 50 pounds routinely 95 pounds occasionally.
