Job Description

Maintains and repairs City equipment; performs routine maintenance and diagnostic checks to ensure vehicles and equipment operate under the conditions which they were designed for.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.

  • Repairs and maintains City vehicles, light equipment, and small machinery and their associated systems such as electrical, hydraulic, compression, and water pumps.
  • Performs complete overhaul and mechanical repair work on City equipment, which includes : automobiles, light and heavy duty trucks, mowers, and other standard and specialized equipment; performs preventive maintenance and diagnostic work on vehicles.
  • Repairs and overhauls transmissions, differentials, front and rear end assemblies.
  • Inspects, adjusts, and replaces necessary units and related parts, valves, pistons, piston rings, brakes, main bearing assembly, cooling, ignition, and fuel systems.
  • Repairs and overhauls motors, generators, carburetor, clutches; replaces brake axles and springs.
  • Repairs and overhauls air compressors, hydraulic systems, and other specialized related equipment.
  • Required to comply with all City of Laredo's policies and procedures.
  • Will be required to drive a City vehicle for City business use.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

  • Ability to maintain a valid Texas Driver License and a good driving record.

  • Minimum Qualifications

    Required Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • At least three (3) years of experience of automotive and preventive service maintenance that includes experience in : maintaining light or small machinery equipment, working on gasoline automotive maintenance and diagnosis, automotive mechanics, automotive wiring systems or related field.
  • Valid Licenses and Certifications

    Required Licenses or Certifications

  • Valid Texas Driver License. If applicant holds an out-of-state license, a State of Texas Driver License must be obtained within 6 months of employment.
  • As part of the minimum requirements for all positions with the City of Laredo, a thorough background check and certified school transcripts will be required from all applicants who are offered employment.

    Effective February 24, 1997, all selected applicants are required to undergo a drug and alcohol test prior to employment.

    Effective January 7, 2008, all persons in safety-sensitive functions / positions, as per City of Laredo Drug and Alcohol Policy definition, shall be subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
