Maintains the city vehicles and equipment such as heavy trucks, landfill heavy equipment, graders, backhoes, loaders, etc. Performs various services such as brake jobs, repairs on hydraulic systems, transmission repairs, and preventive maintenance.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.
- Must be familiar with Caterpillar, Cummins, Detroit, and Volvo engines including all accessories such as turbo and fuel injections systems.
- Must have the ability to work on drive train including rear ends, transmissions, clutches, auxiliary/gear boxes and PTO's on various types of heavy equipment including on and off road.
- Must be proficient on installation of brake systems including all air and hydraulic systems on all city equipment which includes backhoes, loaders, excavators, and landfill type equipment.
- Must be proficient in repairs of all electrical systems, such as heating and A/C systems, lights and truck computers.
- Must be familiar with manual steering gears, power steering and tandem axle suspensions.
- Must be familiar with at least 10 trucks chassis maintained by City Fleet Department.
- Responsible for all oil changes, transmission services, coolant service, lube, minor repairs, oil sampling, lighting repairs, and tire pressures.
- Must be able to work between 40-48 hours, including weekends.
- Assists in maintaining good communication between staff, visitors and other business contacts.
- Must follow all rules of radio and telephone communications.
- Will be required to drive a City vehicle for City business use
- Performs other duties as assigned.

- At least four (4) years of experience working as a diesel and automotive mechanic
Required Licenses or Certifications
- Valid Texas Driver License. If applicant holds an out-of-state license, a State of Texas Driver License must be obtained within 6 months of employment.
Desirable Licenses or Certifications
A valid Texas Commercial Driver License (CDL) class B is preferred.
As part of the minimum requirements for all positions with the City of Laredo, a thorough background check and certified school transcripts will be required from all applicants who are offered employment.
Effective February 24, 1997, all selected applicants are required to undergo a drug and alcohol test prior to employment.
