Enforces City Codes and Ordinances, and issues violations as needed. Conducts property inspections, maintains organized documentation, and educates the public about code violations.ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.
 
  • Receives complaints regarding violations; determines ownership of the property in question by researching computer files.
  • Travels to the addresses of the reported violation and inspects the property to determine if a violation exists.
  • Issues warning/citations to the occupant/owner requesting compliance with City Codes or appearance in City Court; takes photographs to use for future references; follows up to ensure that compliance occurs.
  • Ensures junk vehicles are removed and demolished if compliance to remove them is not obtained in the allotted time period.
  • Participates routinely in Operation Cleanup to inspect targeted areas of the City once a week in cooperation with Building, Health, Public Works, Fire, Police, and Traffic Departments.
  • Conducts field work, follows up with complaints regarding City code and ordinance violations, completes inspections, and necessary course of action to ensure compliance.  
  • Compiles thorough and extensive documentation to ensure consent, clarify expectations, and outline decision-making process.
  • Responds to violations, per protocol, via letters, force cleans, and/or complaints.   
  • Researches credible information to analyze and utilize for the purpose of problem solving and addressing issues.  
  • Assists other departments with various duties, including traffic control, special events, covid inspections, emergency shelters, homeless outreach, budgeting, Operation Clean Up, and surveying.  
  • Will be required to drive a City vehicle for City business use.
  • Performs related work as required.

Physical Effort Requirements Position will have the following exposures

Required Education and Experience
  • Associate’s degree or sixty (60) college hours from an accredited* college or university.
  • At least one (1) year of general work experience.

Required Licenses and Certifications

  • Valid Texas Driver License. If applicant holds an out-of-state license, a State of Texas Driver License must be obtained within 6 months of employment.

As part of the minimum requirements for all positions with the City of Laredo, a thorough background check and certified school transcripts will be required from all applicants who are offered employment.

Effective February 24, 1997, all selected applicants are required to undergo a drug and alcohol test prior to employment.

Effective January 7, 2008, all persons in safety-sensitive functions/positions, as per City of Laredo Drug and Alcohol Policy definition, shall be subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
