ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.
- Performs vaccinations, testing, and medical procedures on shelter animals.
- Collects laboratory specimens such as blood, urine, and feces for testing.
- Observes animals for signs of illness.
- Monitors animals for signs of physical and mental well-being.
- Assists the City's contracted Veterinarian with administering prescribed medication, treatment of animals, and any routine examinations.
- Coordinates sterilization surgeries along with the City's contracted Veterinarian and other assigned departmental staff.
- Performs or may assist in the euthanasia of shelter animals.
- Assists in the cleaning and feeding all shelter animals.
- Maintains adequate inventory of animals and health evaluations.
- Executes blood testing and adequately reports and records results.
- Administers treatment vaccinations as directed by Supervisory staff and/or Veterinarian.
- Maintains clinic area, intake section, and euthanasia room clean and organized.
- Feeds animals when necessary.
- Assists with cleaning duties as needed.
- Issues citations as needed.
- Assists Animal Control as needed.
- Serve as an "essential personnel" and is required to remain available for immediate call us due to any natural manmade disaster, or any event the Animal Care Supervisor and Manager or Director deemed necessary.
- Assists with daily shelter operations.
- Will be required to drive a City vehicle for City business use.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge of:
- Knowledge of common dog and cat diseases.
- Knowledge of basic animal care requirements.
- Knowledge of anesthesia and recovery.
- Knowledge of proper use of surgical instruments and spay/neuter pack preparation and sterilization.

Required Education and Experience
- High School diploma or G.E.D.
- At least two (2) years of hands-on experience working in a public animal care shelter or veterinary clinic under the supervision of a veterinarian.
Rabies Pre-Exposure Vaccines must be obtained within one (1) month of employment. Continued employment is contingent on successfully obtaining the required vaccinations within the specified period of time indicated from time of hire.
Required Licenses and Certifications
Valid Texas Driver License. If applicant holds an out-of-state license, a State of Texas Driver License must be obtained within 6 months of employment.
Certified Veterinarian Assistant Certification from the Texas Veterinary Medical Association (TVMA) must be obtained within fifteen (15) months of employment. **
Basic Animal Control Training to be completed within one year of employment.**
Satisfactory passing grade in compliance with statutory law.

As part of the minimum requirements for all positions with the City of Laredo, a thorough background check and certified school transcripts will be required from all applicants who are offered employment.
Effective February 24, 1997, all selected applicants are required to undergo a drug and alcohol test prior to employment.
