Nature of Work
Environmental Factors
Work is performed in a warehouse, maintenance facility or out in the field. Exposure to hazards including but not limited to all types of fumes/liquids/chemicals, trash, used syringes, electrical shocks, sharp objects and all types of weather conditions
Physical FactorsHeavy physical demands. Will be required to lift heavy tools and parts up to 45 lbs, pull, climb, stand for long periods of time, lay down and kneel in confined areas with hazardous materials.
Work Situation FactorsPosition involves competing demands, performing multiple tasks, working to deadlines, occasional work beyond normal business hours, and responding to customer issues. Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity of services. Position is subject to drug testing in accordance with applicable State and Federal regulations and City of Las Cruces policies.

Duties and Responsibilities
- Inspects, repairs, and maintains mechanical components on a variety of heavy diesel-powered equipment; performs mechanical work on heavy and large equipment; operates a wide variety of hand tools and equipment to perform the necessary tasks of the job; demonstrates skill and safety measures and provides support for other mechanics.
- Inspects, repairs, and maintains components on light duty EV equipment and other equipment in the fleet.
- Performs troubleshooting/diagnosing of electrical including but not limited to Multiplex electrical systems, and mechanical systems and components; conducts research using computers, diagnostic equipment, manuals, and other sources.
- May be required to inspect, repair, troubleshoot/diagnose, and perform preventive maintenance on light duty equipment and vehicles.
- Conducts vehicle safety inspections, provides preventive maintenance, checks fluid levels, checks/adjusts/replace brakes, changes oil, checks and services batteries and charging systems, checks and services cooling systems, and lubricates vehicles and equipment.
- Performs repairs on hoses, vehicles, and related activities; overhauls, maintains, and repairs engines, transmissions, drive train components, hydraulic and air systems and some specialty equipment in certain vehicles; reads and interprets manuals and documents relating to service and repair needs.
- Performs field service calls to repair general and heavy equipment, transports equipment to and from maintenance and repair shop.
- Tests repaired, tuned, and overhauled vehicles and equipment; inspects, analyzes, and evaluates defective equipment; suggests appropriate care, repair, or maintenance procedures.
- May install, diagnose, and repair various GPS, routing, camera, and onboard tablet systems in equipment.
- May perform repairs on heating and cooling systems.
- May be required to prepare vehicles and equipment for state inspections. Communicates with operators to assist in diagnosis of equipment issues and failures to identify mechanical work.
- Gathers, tracks, and monitors maintenance data base schedule on vehicles and equipment; maintains up to date and accurate information on work provided.
- May be required to review and complete repairs identified on Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports.
- Attends all technical services classes and programs ensuring that knowledge is up to date with new equipment and service procedures.
- Maintains a clean and safe work area.
- May assist with orienting employees in moderately complex to complex job tasks.
- May be required to utilize laptop or computer at workstation to receive, document, and track work orders or job tasks. As well as communicate with other personnel.

Knowledge of: Diesel diagnostic procedures and methods; operational characteristics of heavy equipment and motorized equipment; operations and care of internal combustion engines; preventive maintenance procedures regarding heavy vehicles and motorized equipment; methods and techniques of performing diagnostic and troubleshooting services; methods and materials used in welding and fabrication. Principles, practices, techniques, activities, rules, and regulations related to the operations and functions of the position and services provided; current principles of record keeping and records management; principles and practices of effective research methods and data analysis, customer service, and problem resolution techniques; occupational and environmental safety and health hazards, and safety practices; safe and effective use and maintenance of related tools, materials, and equipment; current methods and standards for preparing effective business correspondence; correct English usage, grammar, composition, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary; business and personal computers and related software applications; City organization, operations, policies, and procedures to effectively perform the required functions and duties of the position.
