What are the responsibilities and job description for the HOURLY - 2025 Parks & Recreation Summer Camp position at City of Las Vegas?
The City of Las Vegas Parks & Recreation department is seeking individuals to fill the following positions across our camp centers this summer (starting rates below):
- Senior Assistant - $15/hour
- Site Leader 1 - $16/hour
- Site Leader 2 - $17/hour
Additionally, we are hiring for limited positions at our pools and community centers. These positions will not work directly with children (starting rates below):
- Assistant - $14/hour
Applicants selected for a position will be assigned to a seasonal camp and may be scheduled to work up to 40 hours per week. *FYI, the purpose of this recruitment is to establish an eligible list for current and/ or future openings which may include part-time, year-round or seasonal positions.
Scheduled hours for a part-time, year-round position are limited to 19 hours or less per week with working shifts varying based on the needs of the programs and facility. Hourly employees are also limited to 1,560 hours of work in any 18 month period.
Summer Camp Positions
Sr. Assistant
- The Sr Assistant will be a counselor who assists in the supervision of campers and provides leadership to that specific group.
- You will assist in the planning of activities that will be implemented with the campers each day.
- You will be responsible for the support of the Site Leader and Site Leader 1 by planning daily creative activities and supervising campers.
- Providing direct leadership, guidance, and support to all campers.
- Maintaining and demonstrating a positive, supportive and upbeat attitude that encourages campers to make decisions, accept responsibility, behave appropriately, take initiative, and improve skills.
- Must be a model of enthusiasm, innovation, initiative, involvement, and motivation.
- Basic knowledge of recreational sports, playground games, and activities.
- Duties require physical activity, which includes recreational activities in which you are required to work outdoors and engage in swimming on swim days.
- The Site Leader I will provide direct supervision of camp staff at the assigned camp location.
- Help maintain a positive work environment in which staff and campers feel needed and appreciated.
- Must be a model of enthusiasm, innovation, initiative, involvement, and motivation.
- Communicate regularly with the Recreation Leader.
- Coordinate weekly schedule of activities and submits that schedule to the Recreation Leader.
- Prepare and submit supply requests, in a timely manner, to the Recreation Leader.
- Mediate activity issues.
- Ensure the safety of staff and participants is maintained.
- Supporting camp staff to meet program objectives
- Work directly with parents, resolving parent issues and refer them to the Recreation Leader as needed.
- Write reports such as Citizen Incident Reports, discipline reports, etc., and submit them to the Recreation Leader in a timely manner.
- Keep supervisors apprised of any problems with participant behavior
- Ensure all games and equipment are maintained.
- Ensure that parents are kept apprised of activities, field trips and swim days.
- Duties require physical activity, which includes recreational activities in which you are required to work outdoors and engage in swimming on swim days.
- The Site Leader 2 will assist the Site Leader 1 with their administrative responsibilities.
- May be the designated camp director in the absence of the Site Leader 1.
- Responsible for supporting the implementation of the camp program.
- Must be a model of enthusiasm, innovation, initiative, involvement, and motivation.
- Willing and able to provide daily on-site program guidance, safety, and staff support.
- Able to direct leadership to a group of campers and assist the Site Leader in the Weekly Planning Process.
- Basic knowledge of recreational sports, playground games, and activities.
- Duties require physical activity, which includes recreational activities in which you are required to work outdoors and engage in swimming on swim days.
Recreation Positions
Assistant
- Provides general assistance to facility staff including all full-time employees, senior or lead hourly staff and program/class instructors. Duties include, but are not limited to set-up and tear-down of event/programming equipment, general clerical duties, preparation of food or beverage items, preparing supply requests and cleaning of areas and equipment within the facility or around the perimeter of the facility. This also includes assisting any events/programming units, Floyd Lamb Park or mobile recreation units.
- Customer service duties which include, but are not limited to interacting with customers/participants in-person or over the phone, using registration software to register participants in classes, programs or events, creating customer accounts, taking payments, preparing deposits, distributing promotional materials such as flyers and brochures, and referring disgruntled/upset customers to full-time staff.
- Monitoring duties which include, but are not limited to monitoring or reporting inappropriate behavior of participants to full-time staff, inspecting the facility or facility’s equipment for safety concerns and reporting any concerns to full-time staff, reporting any accidents, incidents or injuries to full-time staff, ensure participants have checked-in at the front desk and ensuring safe/proper use of facility equipment. This also includes assisting in monitoring guests or safety concerns at any events/programming units, Floyd Lamb Park or mobile recreation units.
- You will receive general supervision from designated higher management staff.

Summer Camp Positions
Sr Assistant
- Minimum 16 years of age.
- Needs to maintain the physical agility necessary to demonstrate and maintain sports, and other recreation games and activities, move and maintain equipment, and other physical activities as needed to provide the safety, welfare and security necessary.
- Formal and informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.
- When assigned to the Adaptive Recreation programs, must have experience in working with people with disabilities and the associated behaviors.
- First Aid/CPR and AED certifications preferred but not required.
- Desirable: bilingual skills and the ability to swim.
- High School Diploma or GED Required
- 2-3 Years of experience working as a lead in a recreational environment.
- Some experience in crisis prevention and de-escalation tactics.
- Prior experience in even planning and set up.
- Ability to effectively/patiently communicate with all staff and customers.
- Prior cash handling experience and some computer software proficiency.
- At least 1 year of experience working with children in a recreational and/or camp setting preferred.
- Basic knowledge of recreational Sports, playground games, and activities. (May be required to participate in activities)
- Desirable:
- Experience working with those that may have behavioral disabilities
- Bilingual skills
- Ability to swim
- Minimum 18 years of age.
- First Aid/CPR and AED certifications preferred but not required.
- One year of experience working with children in a group setting preferred.
- Needs to maintain the physical agility necessary to demonstrate and maintain sports, and other recreation games and activities, move and maintain equipment, and other physical activities as needed to provide the safety, welfare and security necessary.
- Formal and informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.
- Any individual offered employment will be required to pass a pre-employment hair drug test and complete background check.
- When assigned to the Adaptive Recreation programs, must have experience in working with people with disabilities and the associated behaviors.
- Desirable: bilingual skills and the ability to swim.
Recreation Positions
Assistant:
- Minimum 16 years of age.
- Formal and informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.
- Basic computer skills is required.
- Cash handling experience desirable.
- Spanish/English bilingual desirable, but not required.
- First Aid/CPR and AED certifications preferred but not required.
