SUMMARY – An evidence unit manager is expected to perform specialized crime scene and crime laboratory work such as evidence detection, criminalistics, firearms, latent print examination or crime laboratory and crime scene photography. Work will sometimes be performed at crime locations where such conditions as the seasonal extremes of weather exist. Work requires moderate physical exertion necessary to lift and move large and heavy materials and objects from crime sites; may be exposed to toxic fumes and chemicals when working in the analytical units of the Laboratory Division. Hours of work will be primarily during the day, Monday to Friday, but after hours responses to major crime scenes will be a part of this position’s duties.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Respond to and process crime scenes for forensic evidence.
- Photograph crime scenes.
- Collect physical and digital evidence from crime scenes.
- Document findings and actions in a detailed report.
- Transport evidence to and from allied crime labs.
- Order and maintain stocks of evidence collection supplies.
- Use specialized laboratory equipment to obtain evidence from a variety of sources.
- Maintain the equipment and cleanliness of the Laurel Police Department’s evidence lab.
- Coordinate the evidence collection efforts of sworn officers assigned to the evidence unit.
- Conduct training for sworn officers on evidence collection methods and best practices.
- Review and approve crime scene reports from other evidence technicians.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES – This position will work under the direction of Commander of Investigative Services. This position will be responsible for monitoring and approving the work product of other sworn evidence technicians. They will be expected to lead and supervise evidence collection efforts for the duration of crime scene events. This position will have no personnel reporting directly to them, and will not be responsible for any routine supervisory tasks such as performance evaluations or leave requests.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS – The minimum eligibility requirements for this position are as follows:
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE – Have a bachelor’s degree in criminalistics, chemistry, biology, physics or a related science from an accredited college or university, OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
At least three years of experience in a police evidence unit or forensic laboratory is strongly preferred.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS – Must possess a current and valid Class “C” Maryland driver’s license, or a comparable driver’s license issued by the employee’s state of residence, and a proven safe driving record.
