Salary/Wage Range: $18.21 - $20.43 based on years of experience

Under the direct supervision of the Recreation Manager, the Swim Instructor provides direct leadership, instruction, and motivation for students and families in group, private, and semi-private swim lessons. Swim Instructors is responsible for ensuring a safe and positive pool environment.

Essential Functions of the Job:
- Conduct swim lessons in a safe and supportive environment.
- Provide instruction on proper swimming techniques and water safety.
- Evaluate and assess the progress of each student.
- Adapt teaching methods to meet the needs of individual students.
- Maintain a clean and organized pool area.
- Ensure the safety of all participants during lessons.
- Attends regularly scheduled work hours and outside regular hours as necessary.
- Effectively and respectfully communicates and interacts with other employees, supervisors, individuals from other organizations, and citizen customers.
- Participates in training and education opportunities to maintain and improve proficiency.
- Performs other related functions as assigned or apparent to achieve the goals and objectives of the Recreation Department.

Requirements
Required Knowledge & Abilities:
- Knowledge of current proper swimming strokes.
- Knowledge of current rules and regulations pertaining to pools.
- Ability to enforce these rules and regulations.
- Ability to supervise all swimmers in lessons.
- Ability to communicate with all different types of people.
- Ability to recognize, respond, and remedy unsafe situations.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be at least 15 years of age.
- Comfortable working in a pool setting.
- Swim lesson instruction or coaching experience.
Conditions of Employment:
- Must comply with organizational and departmental policies.
- Must satisfactorily pass a criminal background examination.
Work Schedule:
The work schedule for this position varies depending on the time of the year/season.
Work Environment/Physical Demands:

While performing the essential functions, this position may be exposed to weather extremes, especially sun in the summer. There may also be daily exposure to fumes, energized equipment, potential hazards, illnesses, and irritants such as dust, dirt, and fumes. While working indoors, this position may also be exposed to high chlorine levels. All mental and physical demands listed herein may not be conducted every day but may be conducted and not limited to 2-3 times per week. Activities that will occur frequently, 4 to 7 hours are lifting or moving up to 25 pounds. The noise level may vary from quiet to extremely loud. Activities that will occur occasionally, 1 to 3 hours, are interpersonal skills and concentration. Activities that occur infrequently, up to 60 minutes, are: lifting or moving up to 100 or more pounds, problem-solving, analytical ability, verbal communication, written communication, organizational skills, creativity, working with interruptions, and time management.
