Effective January 1, 2025, the minimum pay for this position
will increase to $33.85 per hour.
The purpose of this job is to provide fire protection services to the community and the Fire Department through education, engineering, inspections, enforcement, and fire/incident investigations. Examines and reviews processes to ensure all structures are in compliance with adopted fire codes and City ordinances; conducts fire scene investigations to determine origin and cause of all fires; serves as expert on highly sensitive matters; provides testimony in the pursuit of filing criminal charges and working with the Galveston County District Attorney's Office, and participates in community outreach to educate citizens in fire prevention and safety. This is a safety sensitive and/or DOT position. As such, you will be required to participate in random drug testing at the city.Example of Duties

- Assists in planning, organizing, and coordinating the operations of the Fire Marshall's Office to facilitate the department's vision and mission.
- Conducts on-site commercial, multi-family residential and single family residential fire inspections; interact with business owners, home owners, occupants and the general public to discuss violations
- Researches fire and building codes for applicable ordinances and requirements.
- Conducts on scene fire investigations consistent with NFPA 921 and NFPA 1033, the governing fire guide and standard for fire investigators.
- Documents witness interviews and observations including firefighters and other first responders.
- Formulates detailed narratives and statistical reports to include diagraming fire scene and sifting through fire scene to establish and idenfity fire origin and cause.
- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with County, State and Federal Agencies, City Departments and other groups in relation to fire regulations, investigations, and code enforcement.
- Conducts comprehensive fire safety inspections of schools, public and private health care facilities businesses and occupancies for compliance with fire safety codes.
- Reviews applications for permits and licenses.
- Trains fire K9 on trained specific odors and document results.
- Prepares written reports citing code violations, nature of violations and corrective actions.
- Performs follow-up inspections to determine if corrective actions comply with fire safety codes.
- Delivers fire prevention presentations and information to League City citizens and surrounding communities.
- Responds to public inquiries regarding code requirements and answers citizen concerns.
- Maintains training and schedule records and assist in reporting to the state TXFIRS.
- Assists with ordering and receiving of equipment.
- Performs related work as required.
Minimum Qualifications
- Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in Fire Science, Criminal Justice, Emergency Management or Public Administration or a related field, or two years of college
- At least one year of experience in fire service (Fire Inspector/Fire Investigator preferred) and/or Law Enforcement Investigations
- Basic Fire Inspector Certification by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection
- Basic Fire and Arson Investigator Certification by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection
- Basic Peace Officer Certification by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection
