Come join our energetic lifesaving team and make a difference in the community! The Animal Care Technician is an important part of League City Animal Care’s team. This position includes a shared responsibility for the care and well-being of LCAC’s resident pets. This position provides care and training, in the form of Fear Free handling, for our shelter animals. In addition, the ideal candidate will demonstrateexcellent customer service skills that provide a high level of pleasant, professional service to all visitors, staff, and volunteers, and is expected to offer excellence in customer service and public education to all citizens. The Animal Care Technician frequently utilizes shelter software to document behavior, medical conditions and treatment, and records medical information. This position also performs vaccines, blood draws, issuing microchips and may run diagnostic tests. The ideal candidate should be prepared to work independently, follow all health and safety guidelines, and enthusiastically contribute to the professional culture and mission of the League City Animal Care team. This is a safety sensitive and/or DOT position. As such, you will be required to participate in random drug testing at the city.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description. Humanely handle all animals using Fear Free procedures and positive reinforcement techniques as trained. This includes animals which may be ill, injured, quarantined, or aggressive while utilizing established animal care and control equipment and techniques.Provide food, water and proper care for all shelter animals by adhering to schedules and protocols within departmental policy.Clean and disinfect kennels, rooms, cages, equipment, runs and other areas of the facility following sanitization procedures to prevent cross contamination and disease transmission.Maintain a clean, organized, and stocked workspace, including any shared spaces.Provide vaccination, deworming, microchipping, heartworm testing, and preventative medications for all shelter animals as trained (includes blood draw, administering vaccines via subcutaneous, intramuscular, and/or intranasal administration, and other medical procedures as trained).Dispense and administer medications, serums and treatments as trained; complete ear cleaning, bathing, and treating minor abrasions.Accurately record weights and estimated ages of pets.Document animal appearance and activity for general physical condition, obvious signs of illness, disease, and behavior.Maintain accurate and legible files and records for each animal in the shelter; use a computer to input, update and access information regarding shelter animals and to produce written documents.Interact with animals to determine suitability for adoptions, provide training to improve shelter experience and adoption options, and participate in play groups.Maintain low-stress environment by providing daily enrichment, offering environmental or behavioral modifications, and reducing stressors in both environment and handling.Handle and restrain potentially aggressive animals using various animal care and control equipment.Communicate observed animal behaviors and demeanor with the public to coordinate animal adoptions.Provide excellent customer service by greeting guests, assisting with adoption meetings, answering phones, and providing information in a manner that is professional, welcoming, and informative.Prevent unnecessary shelter intake by effectively addressing an individual's barriers to pet retention and connecting the individual with the resources that will enable them to keep their pet in the home.Assist public with information regarding humane pet ownership. Assist with pet reunification and rehoming by informing and assisting citizens with Rehoming and Lost/Found Pet registries.Support community cat programs (TNR and SNR).Maintain personal appearance and behavior that meets the expectations of LCAC’s mission, values, and relationship with the community, including clients, volunteers, employees, and supporters. Perform all other related duties as assigned.Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including holidays and weekends.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Physical RequirementsSkill in: Handling cleaning chemicals, aggressive animals and citizen complaints Ability to: Learn and utilize shelter database software and municipal dispatching systems as needed.Must demonstrate a positive and cooperative attitude toward all staff and citizens.Handle time pressures and perform multiple tasks simultaneouslyWork in a noisy and distracting environmentRemain calm when faced with confrontation and provide excellent customer service.Communicate effectively with the public, supervisors, and fellow employees, verbally and in writing.Must be able to bend, stoop, and kneel on both knees, lift at least 50 pounds and tolerate cleaning chemicals, animal dander and hair.Obtain Fear Free Shelters Certification within 6 months of hire date and maintain the certificationPHYSICAL DEMANDSThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Tasks involve the ability to exert light to medium physical effort lifting at least 50 lbs. The position requires constant walking. Some tasks frequently involve sitting, carrying, crouching, bending, stooping, kneeling on both knees, pushing/pulling and be able to tolerate cleaning chemicals, animal dander and hair. Occasionally fixed dexterity, reaching, handling and climbing is required. Requires the ability to make closely coordinated eye/hand movements within very fine tolerance and/or calibration demands. Must be able to work outdoors in extreme heat, cold or precipitation.
