What are the responsibilities and job description for the Technician I - Signs, Signals, Marking and Lighting position at City of Leander?
Performs entry-level routine work. Work involves engagement in maintaining traffic signs, traffic signals, streetlights, and school zone lights. This position is responsible for implementing and following proper traffic controls, safety procedures, department policies and assisting in training other personnel. This position must be able to be scheduled for on-call rotation to respond to emergencies and after-hour repair needs. Works under close supervision with minimal latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgement.
- Work schedule is Monday – Thursday or Tuesday - Friday from 6:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (schedule is subject to change).
- Performs basic troubleshooting of traffic signal and street light equipment.
- Monitors and maintains traffic cameras.
- Inspects and repairs streetlights.
- Installs and maintains vehicle sensing equipment.
- Performs the replacement of traffic signal lights, heads, and control hardware.
- Performs routine maintenance of traffic signals, school zone beacons, and streetlights.
- Installs and maintains new equipment and removes and replaces components.
- Responds to emergency and non-emergency calls.
- Calculates and measures resistance, amperage, voltage, and wattage values of active electrical and electronic systems.
- Assists other departments by helping with tree removal or trimming; assists with aerial lighting issues; provides electrical support for construction projects, assists with signs and markings, assists with installation of electrical and data conductors.
- Must be able to work independently and as part of a team.
- Must be able and willing to work at heights typically associated with repair, installation, and maintenance of traffic signals and streetlights.
- Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.
- Performs scheduled and unscheduled installation, repair, and maintenance of traffic signs, streetlights, traffic markings, traffic signals and other associated equipment.
- Follows established policies, procedures, and techniques concerning traffic signs, signals, and outdoor lighting.
- Receives, investigates complaints, takes appropriate action as instructed.
- Maintains and troubleshoots pedestrian signals, equipment, and school zone signals.
- Operates a bucket truck, work truck, and other vehicles, tools, and equipment necessary to perform assigned work, including chain saws and other trimming and pruning tools and ensures that they are maintained and kept in good, safe working conditions.
- Follows safety policies, proper usage of equipment, safety devices, vehicles, and all departmental and city policies.
- Escalates customer complaints to a Foreman, Crew Lead, or Assistant Director.
- As an essential employee, you are subject to regular work hours, after-hours callouts, and scheduled overtime during emergency situations which can include icy weather, flooding, police department assistance, etc., including a required on-call rotation, and special events.
- Performs such other related duties as may be assigned.
Required Education and Experience
- High school diploma or its equivalent.
- Minimum of one year full-time related work experience to the job duties and responsibilities.
Required Certificates and Licenses
- Valid Driver's License from any U.S. State. Must be able to obtain a Texas license within 90 days of hire.
- Valid Texas Commercial Driver’s License, Class A with air brake endorsement or must be able to obtain one within 6 months of employment.
- Possession of the following IMSA (International Municipal Signal Association) or approved equivalent certifications:
- Work Zone (or must be able to obtain in 12 months)
- Traffic Signal Technician Level I Certification (or must be able to obtain in 18 months)
- Traffic Signal Field Technician Level II Certification (or must be able to obtain in 24 months This position is eligible for certification pay.
Preferred Qualifications
- One or more years of full-time work experience in repair and maintenance of mechanical systems; traffic signal field or similar experience to the job duties.
- Experience working for a government entity such as a City, County, or a State agency.
- Street signs and marking experience.
- Electrical work experience.
- Signal work experience.
- Ability to: operate a bucket truck, skid loader, backhoe, and small hand tools, chainsaw, shovel, two-way radio, measuring devices; ability to drive a vehicle to and from various work sites.
- Knowledge, skill, and ability to set up secure work zones using cones and barricades.
- Knowledge of construction methods and practices and TXDOT work zone safety requirements and procedure.
- Knowledge of duties performed in construction and maintenance of streets and roadways, hazards, and safety precautions common to equipment operations.
- Skill in using computers and related software applications; handling multiple tasks and prioritizing; and operating assigned equipment, tools, and vehicles safely.
- Ability to: communicate effectively both verbally and in writing;communicate with other employees and the public in a courteous and diplomatic manner; follow detailed verbal and written instruction; read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to work safely.
- Must be able to wear the city provided uniform and city issued personal protective equipment - Steel-toed leather boots, gloves, eye protection, head protection, safety vest, and ear protection.
- Workers must be able to follow safety procedures and use safety equipment to ensure personal, public, and personnel safety.
- Ability to work hours other than the regular daytime schedule such as shift work, on call, or emergency response situations (i.e., early mornings, afternoons, evenings, late-nights shifts, weekends).
- Ability to report safety hazards, equipment problems and emergency situations.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds and push, pull, drag up to 150 pounds.
