Performs entry level work.  Work involves assisting with the daily operation and maintenance of the water distribution and wastewater collection systems. Works under close supervision with minimal latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgement. This position must be able to be scheduled for “on-call” rotation.
  • Work schedule is Monday – Thursday, 6:30 am to 4:00 pm and Friday, 6:30 am to 10:30 am.   Work schedule is subject to change.
  • Assists Utility Maintenance crews in their daily activities which may include but not limited to installation and repair of water and wastewater mains and taps, and clean wastewater lines.
  • Performs water service connects and disconnections.
  • Performs preventive maintenance and repair of motors, pumps and emergency generators; minor repairs on electrical control panels, ordering parts and perform written documentation.  
  • Routinely assists with all Utility Billing work orders.
  • Performs read and re-read meters.
  • Performs meter replacements.
  • Locates utilities when requested.
  • Daily check of wastewater collection manholes and lift stations.
  • Addresses customer concerns.
  • Maintains fire hydrants.
  • Subject to after-hours call out for emergency situations including on call rotation and special events.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Required Education and Experience:

  • High school graduate or its equivalent.

 

Required Certificates and Licenses:

  • A valid driver’s license.  (Approximately 50% driving time in a company vehicle.)


Preferred Education, Experience, Certifications, and Licenses:

  • Associate's degree (A.A./A.S.) from an accredited college or university or trade school certification.
  • One or more year's work experience and/or training in water or wastewater utility operations or construction. 
  • TCEQ Class “I” Collection License and TCEQ Class “D” Water License at time of hire or must begin the process of obtaining the two (2) licenses within nine (9) months of hire date.  
  • Basic first aid certificate or must be able to obtain one within 6 months of the hire date.
  • Texas driver’s license or ability to obtain a Texas driver’s license within 90 days of hire.
  • Must be able to maintain appropriate licenses and certificates.  
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to follow detailed verbal and written instruction.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to communicate with other employees and the general public in a courteous and diplomatic manner.
  • Ability to work hours other than regular daytime schedule such as shift work, on call, or emergency response situations.
  • Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
  • Skill in operating assigned equipment tools and vehicles safely.
  • Must be able to wear city provided uniform and city issued personal protective equipment, steel-toed leather boots, gloves, eye protection, head protection, safety vest, and ear protection.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear and taste or smell.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds and push, pull, drag up to 150 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

 

Working Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; extreme cold and extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, but occasionally loud.
