What are the responsibilities and job description for the Firefighter I (Entry Level) position at City Of Leawood Kansas?

The City of Leawood, Kansas will be accepting applications for Firefighter until October 31, 2022.

Starting rate of pay: $17.89/ hour ($49,311.73 annually). Applicants that hold a Paramedic License are eligible to receive an additional 10% stipend on top of base pay.

** Applicants who are currently completing requirements as a student through an academy or program with an anticipated completion date in or before December 2022 are encouraged to apply. The Leawood Fire Department will work with applicants on the timeline in which testing/documentation will be required to be completed/produced.**

Summary/Objective

The Firefighter I responds to fires, emergency medical calls, hazardous materials incidents, technical rescue incidents, or other incidents as assigned; participates in fire prevention & public education activities, training, and fire/arson investigation as assigned; assist with station, vehicle, and grounds maintenance as well as other technical/specialty work as assigned. Respond quickly and effectively to emergencies, understand and carry out assignments as instructed; work independently or as a member of a team to achieve assigned tasks. This position requires moderate decision-making with some review and guidance. Advancement in grade is expected to increase decision-making responsibilities and decrease necessary review and guidance.

This position is divided into grades based on training, education, and experience.

Essential Functions / Responsibilities

  • Performs a wide variety of tasks on the incident scene related to fire suppression, basic life support, technical rescue, hazardous materials response, etc. using approved techniques and following Fire Department Standard Operating Guidelines, where applicable.
  • Drives and operates Fire Department vehicles in a safe and responsible manner.
  • Participates in the development of goals and objectives at the shift level; is familiar with and assists in meeting Fire Department goals and objectives.
  • Establishes and maintains command and control at emergency and non-emergency incidents in the absence of an officer, until relieved by a senior firefighter or Fire Department officer.
  • Identifies opportunities for improving service delivery and shift performance; reviews with supervisory personnel and assists with implementation.
  • Responsible for attending and participating in education/training opportunities; stays abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of emergency services.
  • Assists in delivering didactic and practical training programs, classes, etc. to Fire Department personnel; presents information and educational presentations to various organizations, schools, and the public on fire safety and related topics.
  • Must complete clear and concise work related reports in a timely manner.
  • Participates in inspections and pre-emergency planning on various facilities including schools, churches, and other buildings to ensure adherence to fire and life safety codes, as assigned by the Fire Prevention Division.
  • Participates in fire prevention and public education activities as assigned.
  • Participates in pre-employment and promotional processes and interviews for the Fire Department; assists in the evaluation and selection of qualified candidates.
  • Responsible for responding, investigating and resolving citizen inquiries and complaints.
  • Performs maintenance activities on fire stations, grounds, and vehicles as assigned; assists with minor construction, painting, or other maintenance projects as necessary to improve fire stations and adjacent grounds.
  • Assists in preparing specifications for apparatus and equipment for Fire Department Operations.
  • Protects and maintains uniforms, personal protective equipment, communications equipment, or other assigned equipment.
  • Maintains the personal appearance and hygiene as necessary to project a professional image for the City and Fire Department.
  • Employee may be required to perform other duties that are not listed but are essential to the job.

Minimum Qualifications / Requirements

  • Ability to demonstrate principles, practices, and techniques of current fire suppression.
  • Ability to read, write, and understand the English language with proper spelling and grammar to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to protect and maintain confidentiality of information.
  • Ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines with effective results.
  • Ability to use safe work practices while on the job, including following proper and stablished procedures in the use of equipment, and wearing the appropriate and/or required safety and personal protective gear.
  • Ability to work in a stressful emergency environment while wearing heavy personal protective clothing and equipment; work in intense life threatening conditions with the potential for exposure to fire, smoke, bodily fluids, noise, and hazardous materials; work in weather extremes such as snow, rain, storms, heat, cold, and any other weather indigenous to the area; make technical and incident management decisions quickly and calmly during stressful conditions.

  • Standard office procedures, systems and practices including the use of a computer.
  • Utilize computers and software programs to include designated records management system to produce documents, reports, graphs, presentations, etc.

Education, Training, and Certification Requirements

*Any advancement in grade must be recommended by the supervisor to the Deputy Fire Chief and then approved by the Fire Chief. The Fire Chief will have final approval over training or education equivalence.*

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Firefighter I & II Certifications (NFPA 1001 compliant, IFSAC or Pro Board preferred)
  • Hazardous Materials Operations certification (NFPA 472 compliant, IFSAC or Pro Board preferred)
  • Emergency Medical Technician license — KSBEMS
  • This position follows a 24 hour shift work schedule which includes weekends and holidays.
  • Must possess a minimum of a valid Kansas Class B or Missouri Class E driver’s license within two (2) years of hire.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record per the City’s drivers Use of Vehicles for City Business policy throughout employment with the City.

  • Paramedic (This is an optional certification addition to any firefighter rank)
  • Current KSBEMS certification as a Paramedic
  • Complete Paramedic Responsibility Acceptance document
