Job Summary
Under the general supervision of the Director of Planning & Zoning, performs routine maintenance of the City’s trail system and conservation lands; performs related interpretation, education, and leadership duties involving the general public and volunteers.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
These job duties and responsibilities are representative. Specific duties may be assigned to others and/or added to meet the City’s business and operational needs.
- Patrol City conservation areas and trails to enforce applicable rules and regulations.
- Perform routine trail maintenance duties, including brush clearing, signage installation, light construction, minor drainage improvements, boundary patrol, easement management, and trail blazing.
- Prepare and conduct interpretive and educational programs for the general public related to the City’s trails and conservation areas.
- Plan and implement trail improvement projects in accordance with the approval and direction of the Conservation Commission.
- Present monthly reports on activities to the Conservation Commission or the Director of Planning & Zoning.
- Recruit, train, and direct volunteers and community service workers in accomplishing trail improvement projects.
Recommended Minimum Qualifications
- High school graduation or equivalent with supplemental experience or course work in natural resources, trail maintenance, and interpretive education.
Other combinations of education and experience that qualify an individual to perform the job duties and responsibilities may be considered.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; interpret written and oral instructions;
- Ability to prepare and present effective park interpretive programs to the general public, including basic knowledge of New Hampshire flora, fauna, biology, and geology;
- Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with individuals and groups in explaining applicable rules and regulations; supervise small work groups in trail improvement activities;
- Ability to operate a pick-up truck and/or passenger van safely; perform basic carpentry and trail maintenance and operate various hand tools and hand power tools;
- Ability to work effectively with little to no direct supervision, analyze situations and take appropriate action.
- Valid driver’s license
- Basic first aid & CPR certification required; wilderness first aid certification preferred
Physical Requirements
- The incumbent works a majority of the time in the outdoors, experiencing extremes of heat, cold, and precipitation.
- The incumbent is required to walk, sit, stand, use hands, listen/hear, climb/balance, stoop, kneel, and crouch.
- The incumbent is required to walk moving up and down steep terrain on foot and to see and negotiate rough land, possibly strewn with boulders and/or downed trees and limbs.
- The incumbent is may be required to lift up to 75 pounds on occasion.
