JOB DESCRIPTION
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS/DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: The duties listed below include, but are not limited to, the various types of work that may be performed by individuals in this classification. Any of the following duties may be performed. All employees are expected to maintain job proficiency by completing relevant position specific training, and pursuing available and approved professional development opportunities; maintain work area in a clean and orderly manner; maintain regular job attendance and adherence to working hours; follow all City policies; follow all established safety rules and procedures.
- Maintain open drainage ditches and clear obstructions by mechanical means and apply herbicides as necessary.
- Locate lines and manholes.
- Operate light Public Works equipment and a variety of hand and power tools, as well as dump trucks, utility tractors, concrete saws, chainsaws, weed eaters, etc.
- Clean equipment used in the maintenance of systems. Perform routine maintenance on vehicles and equipment, such as maintaining proper fluid levels and lubrication, replacement of broken parts, etc. Ensure adherence to established maintenance schedules on vehicles and equipment, e.g. tune-ups, etc.
- Use and operate flagging equipment to control traffic in vicinity of Public Works crews.
- Perform water shutoffs and turn-ons.
- Develop and sustain positive, cooperative, team-oriented working relationships with supervisor, co-workers, and ancillary staff.
- Assist other personnel within the department as workload and staffing levels dictate.
- Operate a vehicle safely and legally.
MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalent, and two years’ experience in collections, or any satisfactory combination of related experience and training which demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the above duties.
- Possession of Class B Commercial Driver License with air brake and tank endorsements.
- Possession of Immediately Supervised Public Pesticide Trainee license within 30 days.
- Possession of Work Zone Traffic Control certification within six (6) months of hire.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
- Possession of Wastewater Collection Level I certificate.
- Current Class B CDL with hazmat endorsement.
- Current Work Zone Traffic Control certification.
- Valid CPR/First Aid card.
- Previous experience with the City’s Public Works Department
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of:
- Thorough knowledge of procedures used in the installation, maintenance, and repair of collection systems, including mains, laterals, manholes, catch basins, open ditches, etc.
- Implementing work methods and procedures which promote a safe working environment and ensure proper staff training in work safety.
- Evaluating work priorities, procedures, and processes to determine their effectiveness and efficiency.
- Providing outstanding customer satisfaction (internally and externally).
- Communicate orally and in writing in a clear and concise manner.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationship with those contacted in the course of work.
- Represent the City positively and effectively in meetings with others.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Majority of duties take place outdoors with exposure to all types of weather conditions and terrain on a year-round basis; exposure to dirt, grease, oil, bio-hazardous waste, fumes, chemicals, and noise which may require hearing protection. Position is subject to emergency on-call response after normal duty hours.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Supervision is not a typical function assigned to this position. May provide training and orientation to newly assigned personnel on department policies and practices.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the lead direction of the Collections Crew Chief and general supervision of the Maintenance Operations Manager.
