Sanitation Supervisor

GENERAL DEFINTION OF WORK A Sanitation Truck Driver Supervisor is responsible for overseeing and coordinating the activities of sanitation truck drivers, ensuring efficient and safe waste collection and disposal. This role involves managing routes, scheduling work, maintaining equipment, and ensuring compliance with regulations. They also handle employee performance, training, and addressing customer complaints. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Include the following but not limited to: · Directs the activities of the Sanitation Department including planning, organizing, and assisting crews in collecting and disposal of solid waste. · Handles questions, concerns, and complaints from the general public with tact and diplomacy and follows up to ensure timely correction of problems. · Inspects completed work for conformance to standards. · Interprets city policies for workers and enforces safety regulations. · Establishes or adjusts work schedules to meet demands of trash collection. · Observes sanitation crews to ensure effective and efficient collection of trash. · Suggests changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase efficiency of work crews. · Analyzes and resolves work problems or assists workers in solving work problems. · Inspects city rights-of-way and assigns crews to areas in need of litter collection (if time permits). · Verifies crews are on track to meet daily production routes on software programs. · Assist work crews as needed. ADDITIONAL EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED · Maintains proper records for individual team member production. · Assists with reports, materials, equipment, and supplies to be used in the Sanitation Department. · Collaborate with other departments to coordinate cleaning activities around production schedules and minimize disruption. · Ensure all waste disposal processes meet environmental regulations and company standards. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES · Directly supervises a team of 12 or more employees in the Sanitation Department. · Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the city’s policies and applicable laws. · Assures crew is adequate to meet production needs and coordinates with other utility divisions or public services divisions to maintain adequate staffing. · Assures crews are maintaining equipment to meet manufacturer’s requirements for daily use. · Assures crews follow all safety requirements. · Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. LANGUAGE SKILLS · Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. · Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. · Ability to speak effectively before groups of employees of the department and other city departments. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS · Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure. · Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent to draw and interpret bar graphs. COMPUTER SKILLS · Intermediate knowledge and skills utilizing Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and outlook). o Word: Ability to create, format, and edit documents. o Excel: Intermediate knowledge of spreadsheets. o Outlook: Competence in managing emails, calendars, and scheduling. · Prior knowledge or experience utilizing an HRIS system for employee scheduling, timesheets, time approvals and reports or ability to learn the Dayforce HRIS system to manage staff schedules and timesheets, strongly desired. · Ability to troubleshoot basic computer, software, and network issues to ensure smooth operations. · Knowledge of editing routes and creating reports using routing software (e.g., Routeware, Smartcity, etc.). or ability to learn and demonstrate proficiency withing 60-90 days of hire. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES · Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. · Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. · Ability to supervise and direct the work of others including planning, organizing, assigning, assisting, and inspecting work functions of the Sanitation Department. · Ability to express instructions clearly and concisely. · Ability to use necessary tools and equipment and to train others in their use. · Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other employees. · Knowledge of the materials and equipment used in refuse collection. · Ability to train employees on occupational hazards and safety precautions. · Knowledge of the operation and minor maintenance of equipment used in refuse collection. · Knowledge of city streets and rights-of-way. · Knowledge of applicable local, state, and federal safety regulations. · Ability to use good judgment to make decisions and work independently. · Ability to be the customer’s champion in meeting their needs. · Ability to support Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) customers through innovative solutions in accommodation. EDUCATION High School Diploma or G.E.D is required. Any post-high school training, technical school or additional education is a plus. DRIVER LICENSE Valid Tennessee Driver’s License with Class B CDL is required. Clear driving record is required. If candidate does not have a valid Tennessee driver's license, they must acquire one in 30 days of hire. EXPERIENCE Minimum of 5 years’ experience in Utilities, Public Works and/or Solid Waste Collection is required. Minimum of 1-year prior experience in a supervisory, crew leader or related management role is required. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS, WORK ENVIRONMENT, AND WORK ENVIROMENT Incumbents are exposed to dangerous equipment and to heat, cold, rain, noise, and other adverse conditions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand for long periods of time; walk; use hands to grasp, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and climb or balance. The employee must sometimes lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally move, push, pull or carry 75 to 100 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include the ability to adjust focus. The employee must routinely roll the garbage cart from the roadside/driveway to the automatic lift on the sanitation vehicle. Work involves both indoor administrative duties and outside field work. Most work involves outside observation and supervision of work crews. May be required to step in to perform the work of a Sanitation Truck Driver for training purposes and when operational needs require. While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Must be able to operate a motor vehicle to travel locally, throughout Lebanon or Wilson County. Occasional travel may require the business use of personal vehicle, mileage is reimbursed by the City of Lebanon. Incumbent will be required to maintain bodily injury/liability insurance at 100/300 and provide proof on insurance up on hire.
