Water Systems - Light Equipment Operator- no CDL

GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK Operates light equipment as utilized in construction, maintenance, and repair activities; performs a variety of semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance of roads, rights-of-way, bridges, and storm drainage systems; performs related work as assigned. Works under the close supervision of the assigned supervisor. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES May operate bobcat, skid steer, backhoe, UTV/Gator, crew truck, tractor mowers, or other light vehicle in the loading, hauling and unloading of various equipment, materials, and supplies. May operate machinery as department needs require. Works with and assists as part of a crew in digging ditches, repairing bridges, laying pipe, spreading asphalt and/or any other related work as necessary. May be responsible for grounds maintenance. May be required to use various saw following but limited to:(concrete saw, reciprocating saw, hydraulic saw, etc.) Occasionally operates heavy equipment that does not require a CDL. Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards. Other duties as assigned. May be required to work a stagger shift, depending on weather conditions if department needs require. May be required to work “on-call” duty as assigned by Utilities Director or other authorized Supervisor. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Considerable knowledge of equipment operating principles; working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to vehicular equipment operations; working knowledge of the methods, materials and tools used in road and bridge maintenance work. Skill in operation of listed tools and equipment. Ability to understand and follow oral or written instructions Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Ability to observe proper safety precautions. Ability to establish effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors and the public. Ability to perform heavy manual tasks under varying weather conditions.  Ability to drive and operate a variety of equipment under varying conditions, excavation sites. NONESSENTIAL DUTIESControls traffic at work sites by flagging to guide traffic through work areas, as required or as assigned. TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USEDMotorized vehicles and equipment that does not require a CDL, such as pickup truck, UTV, crew cab, saws, common hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches, mobile radio, phone. EDUCATION A high school diploma or G.E.D is required. EXPERIENCE Some experience required involving the use of light to medium sized equipment, some of which must have been related to construction, repair and/or maintenance is preferred. DRIVER’S LICENSE Valid Tennessee Driver's License and clear driving record is required. A Class B CDL is a plus but not required.  AGE REQUIREMENTS Must be minimum of 18 years of age. The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes orairborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
