Position Summary
Under general supervision, the Construction Inspector I inspects public infrastructure construction projects, including witnessing materials testing, to determine compliance with the standards and specifications of the City. This position prepares and maintains documentation of progress on each project, measures and records each item of work for CIP projects and prepares pay estimates. Work is performed with latitude for the exercise of independent judgment with respect to the interpretation and application of standards and specifications in accordance with sound construction / engineering judgment.
Essential Functions, Duties and Responsibilities
Qualifications
Minimum : High school diploma or G.E.D.; a minimum of two years of inspection / field construction experience; or equivalent experience, education and training. Must possess and maintain a valid driver-s license. Must possess or obtain KDOT - Certified Inspector Training Certification and ACI Concrete Field Tester Certification within one year of hire. Must complete required NIMS IS-100 and IS-700 training within three months of employment.
Desired : Associate degree in civil engineering technology or Certified Engineering Technician with a minimum of two years of construction inspection experience and materials testing experience for civil infrastructure projects.
Environment and Physical Factors
This position requires good physical condition including the ability to walk / climb over difficult terrain to make inspections; the ability to lift objects weighing up to 50 lbs.; visual acuity and ability to distinguish color to inspect projects; the ability to mobilize through rebar, slick and muddy conditions and other hazardous construction-related environment; the ability to work safely near large and loud equipment; and the ability to hear warning alarms and signals. This position requires the ability to work outside for extended periods in extreme weather conditions; potentially hazardous environments and elements such as lime, hot asphalt, fly ash, concrete and other hazards of active construction sites.
Rate of pay is $24.64 to $28.56 per hour dependent on qualifications and directly related experience. The City of Lenexa offers a comprehensive benefits package including :
