Successful candidates will address why they they want to become a Police Officer with the Lewiston Police Department in their Cover Letter. Cover Letter and Resume are required. 


Under the direction of assigned supervisor, perform law enforcement duties and other services to safeguard the lives, property and constitutional rights of the citizens of Lewiston; respond to crime and accident scenes, emergency situations and other requests for assistance; detect, apprehend and arrest criminals; enforce the laws and ordinances of the City; perform a variety of specialized duties as assigned.

Provide a variety of police functions and other services to enforce the laws and ordinances of the State of Idaho and City of Lewiston and safeguard the lives, property and constitutional rights of citizens; Respond to a wide variety of calls from citizens in need of first aid, information and general assistance.

Provide first aid and rescue services at crime scenes, accidents and other emergency situations.

Communicate with other City personnel, law enforcement agencies and health care providers to coordinate efforts, resolve problems and exchange information.

Prepare accurate and detailed investigative reports; complete a variety of forms and issue citations as appropriate.

Utilize and maintain a variety of specialized equipment such as firearms, police vehicles, radios, baton, handcuffs, flares and other according to established procedures.

Drive patrol vehicle in an assigned area, observing for conditions and activities in which there appears to be potential or actual harm to persons or property, disruption of public order, or any other violations of law.

Respond to observed or reported suspected or actual harmful or illegal conditions or activities or resulting from an investigation and taking appropriate action required for preventing, subduing or alleviating such conditions or activities; Apprehend traffic violators, issuing citations, warning and testing and booking offenders; apprehend and arrest persons suspected or convicted of committing crimes; Willingness to use deadly force which may result in death if necessary, in the performance of duties as a police officer.

Prepare formal descriptive reports of, and provide testimony about potentially, suspected, or actual harmful or illegal conditions or activities, and of actions taken in response to such conditions or activities, for use by the department and other public agencies.

Investigate criminal complaints to determine if a case is valid and able to be prosecuted; observe, interview and interrogate victims, witnesses and suspects; research cases and develop investigative strategy.

Prepare cases for trial including preparation of evidence, photographs, and documents; conduct background investigation of offenders as necessary including detailed checks of automated information; present material in court as necessary.

Maintain proficiency in driving, the use of firearms, defensive tactics, and in arrest control techniques in accordance with departmental guidelines.

Participate in or provide training and instruction in specialized police duties as directed; Provide direction or information to individuals or groups for the purpose of preventing, subduing or alleviating harmful, dangerous or illegal situations.

Conduct crime scene investigation including photography, evidence gathering and measuring; perform surveillance duties as assigned.

Provide instruction in schools and the community regarding crime prevention and other law enforcement subjects as assigned; Conduct presentations for community groups as necessary including parents, clubs and special interest groups.

Perform related duties as assigned.Minimum Qualifications:

Any combination equivalent to:  graduation from high school or GED. Qualification for Basic Certification through Idaho Peace Officer Standards and Training Council; Basic POST Certification within twelve (12) months of employment; valid driver’s license; successful completion of physical examination.

SPECIFIC DISQUALIFIERS/BEHAVIORS:

Felony, Criminal Activity Disqualifiers:
Conviction or withheld judgement on any felony offense. Convictions or withheld judgments for any misdemeanor sex crimes, DUI, domestic violence, stalking, civil protection order violation or child abuse.

Driving Disqualifiers:
Misdemeanor traffic violations within five years of application.

Drug Use Disqualifiers:
Violations of the Lewiston Police Department Drug Policy or failure to meet IDAPA rules for drug use, 11.11.01.055 as of March 20, 2014. This includes using marijuana (legally or illegally) in the last 3 years or any Schedule 1 thru VI drug in the last 5 years.

Employment Disqualifiers:
Theft of company property. Misuse of company or department finances. Falsification of time reporting or other official documents. Drug or alcohol use that negatively affected job performance. Sick leave abuse. Committing any form of illegal harassment.

Financial Disqualifiers
A credit check is part of the background investigation.

Additional Disqualifiers
Discharge from the military for "Other Than Honorable". Failure of a polygraph exam, psychological evaluation, medical exam or drug test prior to hire date.


Knowledge & Abilities:

Principles, practices and procedures used in police work. State, County and City laws and ordinances.
Geography of the City and specific areas of assignment. Rules of evidence and laws of arrest.
Operation of a variety of specialized police vehicles and equipment. Oral and written communication skills.
Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy. Basic first aid procedures. Appropriate use and care of firearms.

Exercise independent discretion when responding to emergencies. Protect the lives, property and constitutional rights of the citizens of Lewiston. Prepare clear and concise reports. Present evidence and testimony in court. Maintain current knowledge of the law and modern law enforcement techniques.

Respond to crime and emergency scenes and take immediate and appropriate action. Maintain proficiency in driving, the use of firearms, defensive tactics, and in arrest control techniques in accordance with departmental guidelines. Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action.

Participate in specialized programs and assignments to support police-related activities and community relations. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Read, interpret, apply and explain laws, codes, rules, regulations, policies and procedures. Understand and work within scope of authority. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. Observe legal and defensive driving practices. Comply with safety standards and regulations. Perform duties requiring physical endurance in running, climbing and lifting.


Working Conditions:

Outdoor work environment, subject to seasonal heat and cold, temperature changes or extreme weather conditions, regular exposure to fumes, dust and odors, evening or variable hours, and emergency call-out. Physical activities include driving a vehicle, motorcycle or other vehicle or riding a bicycle to conduct work, reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally, walking over rough or uneven surfaces, climbing stairs, bending at the waist, stooping, kneeling or crouching, crawling, turning/twisting, speaking and exchanging information, shift work, heavy lifting up to 50 pounds, and physical agility and stamina. May be exposed to possible fights and confrontations, contact with dissatisfied or abusive individuals, driving a vehicle during adverse weather conditions, fumes from vehicle and equipment operation, explosives, extreme weather conditions, and contact with blood and body fluids.

Salary : $60,270 - $80,767
