Salary Information:
  • Reserve Firefighter $400 per 24-hour shift, up to 24 shifts per month
  • Firefighter/EMT $59,268 – $77,331/annual base salary*
  • Firefighter/Paramedic $67,001 - $85,065/annual base salary

Position Summary:
Under the direction of Engineers, Company and/or Chief Officers, Reserve Firefighters respond to a variety of emergency situations including fires, hazardous materials incidents, technical rescues, vehicle extrications, aircraft incidents, and medical emergencies. They provide basic life support (BLS) and/or advanced life support (ALS) as needed and maintain Fire Department equipment, apparatus, and building cleanliness. Responsibilities also include performing fire suppression, hazmat operations, rescue and extrication, and technical rescue operations. Reserve Firefighters operate and maintain fire apparatus and ambulances, report equipment malfunctions, and keep detailed records. They participate in emergency incident command, ensure the safety of colleagues, conduct training drills, and contribute to community safety presentations.
Essential Functions:
  • Perform fire suppression for the following: structural, automotive, wildland, chemical, aircraft, marine and petroleum applying appropriate techniques and extinguishing agents. Perform hazmat, rescue and extrication, and technical rescue operations as assigned or required. 
  • Respond with, and support operators of fire apparatus including fire engines and aerial trucks.  Respond with or operate rescue squads and wildland pumpers to emergency scenes as assigned; place and operate equipment including pumping, hydraulic power tools and devices. 
  • Perform emergency medical skills, initiate emergency care including assessment, triage, treatment, and transport.
  • Perform skills within level of EMS certification including but not limited to:  IV, defibrillation, endotracheal intubation, medication administration, bleeding control, bandaging, splinting and stabilization, receive and transport patients. 
  • Respond with and operate ambulances as assigned or required; place and operate patient care equipment including stretchers, stair chairs, and other patient movement devices.  
  • Report shortage, malfunctions or defects in equipment, supplies and apparatus to supervisors or other personnel as appropriate; maintain records of supplies restocked in ambulances.
  • Maintain, clean and inspect Fire Department apparatus; check tires, batteries, fuel, oil and water levels, wildland pumps, emergency lights, warning devices, related medical and fire equipment, and maintain all appropriate service logs. 
  • Assume command and coordination of emergency fire and medical incidents until relieved by a ranking Department member. 
  • Assures safety of co-workers while on duty and during emergencies.
  • Prepare and maintain a variety of records and reports related to fire suppression, medical emergencies, medical treatment and training as directed; participate in the development and completion of goals and objectives.  
  • Participate in training drills and attend classes in various technical fire and EMS related activities, techniques and procedures; assist in the development and review of pre-fire plans; read firefighting and EMS manuals, participate in OTEP programs and participate in in-house training. 
  • Conduct safety and emergency awareness presentations; conduct fire station tours and explain firefighting techniques, procedures, policies and safety precautions.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or G.E.D.    
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Idaho and Washington EMT-B (National Registry EMT B certification minimum. Must obtain Idaho and Washington EMS certifications prior to transitioning from Trainee to Reserve FF) 
  • Firefighter I (IFSAC / ProBoard certificate required)
  • Hazmat Awareness / OPS (certificate required)
  • ICS 100, 200, 700 & 800 certifications

Knowledge:

  • Fire Department organization and Incident Command System (ICS) 100, 200, 700 & 800
  • Basic building construction principles (i.e. commercial and residential construction)
  • Principles and practices of fire science and medical treatment in emergencies
  • Record-keeping techniques (i.e. NFIRS, PCR), communication skills, interpersonal skills
  • Applicable laws, codes, regulations, policies and procedures, basic computer skills, proper tool and equipment usage, patient care guidelines


Abilities:

  • Respond to various emergencies and operate specialized fire and EMS equipment.
  • Drive emergency vehicles safely and efficiently.
  • Utilize fire suppression agents and techniques effectively.
  • Participate in ongoing fire and emergency services training and maintain EMT status.
  • Perform minor repairs on equipment, apparatus, buildings, and grounds.
  • Set up and operate hydraulic and emergency equipment at fire scenes.
  • Maintain records, prepare reports, and collaborate effectively with others.
  • Work in adverse conditions, perform heavy physical labor, and demonstrate physical agility and stamina.
  • Maintain a level of fitness suitable for strenuous tasks and work with SCBA.
Working Conditions:
  • Indoor and outdoor environments, shift work, emergency callouts, adverse weather conditions.
  • Physical demands include dexterity, climbing, stretching, bending, heavy lifting, swimming, and physical stamina.
  • Exposure to extreme heat, flames, toxic smoke, chemicals, hazardous materials, high voltage, and other hazardous conditions.
