Position: STREET MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN I

Department: Street Department

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform a variety of manual labor tasks associated with street and storm sewer maintenance and the operation of large and small vehicles and power equipment. Work is normally performed under the guidance of under the direct supervision of a Street Maintenance Foreman II, but some assignments require working independently.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Sets up and picks up barricades, lane cones, and warning signs to channel traffic around work crews;
  • Rakes and tamps asphalt and spreads aggregate on street repair projects;
  • Operates jackhammers, and pneumatic compacting equipment;
  • Operates a 4-yard or 6-yard dump truck, asphalt paving truck and trailer, and an asphalt roller;
  • Cleans drainage ditches and storm drainpipes.
  • Drives truck when traveling to, from and between jobs;
  • Operates vibratory rollers, air compressors, hydraulic tools and other similarly sized maintenance equipment;
  • Digs up ground for ditches, sign posts, etc., using a pick, shovel, spade or other hand tool;
  • Operates and maintains a crack seal kettle and emulsion spray wand
  • Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of:

  • Traffic laws, ordinances and rules involved in equipment operation.
  • Techniques and methods of street repair and maintenance.
  • City Traffic Barricade Manual.

Ability to:

  • Work cooperatively with other City employees and the public.
  • Move debris, dirt or other material from one place to another using a shovel, rake, or other tool.
  • Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
  • Communicate orally in the English language with other City employees in face-to-face, one-on-one settings.
  • Understand and comply with simple English written and oral instructions.
  • Understand simple road maps.
  • Move heavy objects (50 pounds or more) short distances (less than 20 feet).
  • Remain in a standing position for extended periods of time.
  • Coordinate the movement of more than one limb simultaneously (example: operating the clutch and accelerator on a 6-yard dump truck).
  • Lift arms above shoulder level to place crack seal material into kettle.
  • Operate power driven machinery such as jack hammer, tamper, or other equally sized equipment to repair City streets.
  • Work outside in a variety of environmental extremes such as heat, cold, rain, air pollution and dust.
  • Work with and around chemicals, gases, and other toxic or dangerous substances using only normal protective equipment.

Additional Requirements:

  • Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment or shift.
  • This classification requires the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. In addition, individuals are required to pass an Arizona Department of Transportation physical exam and possess the appropriate commercial driver's license. Pre-employment drug testing is required, and employees will be subject to unannounced alcohol and drug testing as a condition of continued employment. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Completion of the City's Street Maintenance Worker Trainee program or one year of experience in street maintenance or construction work at the level of laborer or semiskilled worker. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
