Description
The Building Inspector is responsible for conducting inspections, plan reviewing, issuing permits, interpreting building codes for the public, and enforcing sign, nuisance, and zoning ordinances.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Performs structural, plumbing, and related inspections for compliance with the State Building Code, federal and state laws, and city ordinances pertaining to building construction.
- Confers with developers, homeowners, designers, and contractors during all stages of design and construction; coordinates with other governmental agencies to implement policies and report violations.
- Assists in the administration of platting ordinances, zoning enforcement, and municipal licensing laws; recommends changes.
- Handles difficult public contact problems and assists and advises the general public, design profession, and construction industry on matters relating to the building code and building construction.
- Reviews building plans to assure compliance with building and fire codes.
- Maintains and generates all necessary records, reports, and related information; attends meetings and presents information as directed.
- Informs site superintendents, owners, and contractors of violations verbally and via written correction notices.
- Performs other duties as assigned or apparent.

Work Environment
Work is frequently performed in field settings with all kinds of weather from very hot to very cold. Various terrain is possible. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers, tools, machinery, and office equipment.
The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to wet and / or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration.
