Job Objective & Safety/Security Sensitive Designation
Essential Functions
- Supervises the analysis of daily offense and arrest reports to identify crime patterns, including suspect characteristics and demographic information as they relate to certain crimes.
- Communicates crime trends, suspect characteristics, and intelligence data to operational components of the Police Department.
- Recommends staffing patterns to management to anticipate and combat criminal activity.
- Develops, updates, and implements policies and procedures for the Crime Analysis Unit.
- Enters and ensures the maintenance of crime data into computer program systems to prepare reports, graphs and maps for presentations to management concerning crime trends and necessary corrective action.
- Prepares monthly, quarterly, semi-annual, and annual statistical reports for management detailing the activities of Crime Analysts.
- Investigates administrative and operational problems within the Crime Analysis unit; reports findings and recommends solutions.
- Analyzes criminal activities in the city to identify specific crime patterns regarding types of crime, time, place of occurrence, and offender identity to develop effective means and information and evidence to prevent activity.
- Maintains hard copy and computer files and records relating to crime analysis and related programs and projects.
- Assigns, prioritizes, trains, monitors, and directs the work activities of assigned personnel; ensures assigned personnel completes training as required; approves and determines work schedules; ensures adequate coverage for unit operations.
- Evaluates and monitors the performance of crime analyst unit operations and recommends new procedures and methods to improve efficiency of unit operations; investigates operational or administrative problems, or complaints; reports findings and recommends solutions to Assistant Police Chief or appropriate personnel; implements upon approval.
- Compiles information, analyzes findings, makes interpretations and prepares various narrative and statistical reports to identify crime patterns in the city; prepares reports with recommendations.
- Prepares or ensures the preparation of Special Information Bulletins and Directed Patrol Requests utilizing crime statistical data; disseminates information to appropriate personnel.
- Oversees the compilation of data and preparation for presentation at Departmental Compstat meetings.
- Contacts and collaborates with various governmental agencies to gather criminal statistical data and compare crime analysis methods.
- Conducts research relative to various federal and state laws and local ordinances; compiles data and related information in response to special crime information requests.
- Attends various meetings to make public presentations concerning crime information and prevention to City Board of Directors, civic organizations and neighborhood watch groups.
- Operates a computer utilizing database, spreadsheet, word processing, and mapping software.
Minimum Qualifications, Additional Requirements and Supervisory Responsibilities
- Must be available to work outside normal working hours to include nights, weekends, and holidays as required.
- Testifies in court regarding crime data.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Application Requirements

Health Insurance (medical, dental, vision) - The City pays the eintire cost of employee only health insurance for the base plan. Higher levels of health coverage and dependent coverage is available at the employee's option; the City pays part of the cost of this additional coverage.
Life Insurance - The City pays the total cost of employee life insurance. Amount of coverage is one to three times salary, based on job classification.
Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) – The City pays the total cost for employee AD&D. Amount of coverage is one times salary.
Long-Term Disability – The City pays the total cost of long-term disability insurance. Amount of coverage is 60% of salary.
Retirement – Our 401a pension plan requires contributions by both the City and the employee.
Paid Time Off
Paid Time Off (PTO) Leave may be used for vacation, personal illness, funeral Leave/attendance, illness of a family member or other personal business.

Short-Term Disability Leave
Short-Term Disability (STD) can be used for extended personal illness requiring the employee to be absent more than three (3) days (with acceptable medical documentation).
All full-time non-uniformed non-union eligible employees earn STD at the rate of six (6) days per year.
After five (5) years of service, an employee will receive 2% of the STD account (maximum 1,000 hours) per years of service, upon termination of employment.
Longevity
Longevity pay will be paid at the rate of $4 per month for each year of service up to and including the fifth (5th) year and $6 per month for each year of service beginning at six (6) years and for each year thereafter.
