SAFETY / SECURITY SENSITIVE DESIGNATION : Under Review by the Office of the City Attorney
JOB OBJECTIVE : To provide assistance to appellate and litigation attorney(s) by conducting legal research, preparing cases for trial, drafting various legal documents, and related assignments for the City Attorney's Office.
Essential Functions
- Prepares and drafts various legal correspondence to include legal documents, pleadings, motions, and subpoenas; assists in the preparation of discovery documents and responses and prepares power point presentations as assigned.
- Provides administrative and litigation support to attorneys with trial preparation, to include organization of exhibits and evidence; coordinates witness preparation and scheduling of witness process; assists attorneys throughout trial process.
- Conducts investigations and interviews with City employees and others in order to gather information relating to particular legal issues and litigation.
- Conducts legal research to support attorneys; identifies and analyzes relevant case laws and statutory authority for appellate arguments, judicial decisions, legal articles, appellate issues and precedents, and other related materials; prepares case files and documents and general administrative assistance as required.
- Communicates with clients to obtain information and provides updates with appellate court clerks and staff regarding case status and procedural requirements; gathers and organizes client documents; responds to inquiries from court personnel and addresses any issues related to appellate filings.
- Schedules and maintains calendar for the Attorneys by coordinating and scheduling internal and external meetings, conferences calls, and makes scheduling modifications based on priorities and emerging needs; notifies appropriate individuals of scheduled meetings; takes meeting notes and notes items requiring action or follow up; secures meeting rooms and makes catering and other arrangements as needed.
- Conducts analysis and summarizes case files and related legal documents; provides litigation support and strategic planning.
- Monitors and tracks appellate filing deadlines and court submissions; ensures timely filing of all appellate documents and briefs and related information; notifies appropriate personnel of any issues related to deadlines and filings.
- Reviews and organizes documents for discovery purposes; summarizes depositions and trial transcripts.
- Provides assistance to attorneys in drafting appellate briefs to include researching case law and statutes; proofreads and edits appellate briefs for accuracy and compliance with court guidelines, rules, and regulations.
- Provides assistance to attorneys in the preparation of oral arguments to include organization of key points and arguments; coordinates the logistics and scheduling of oral argument sessions.
- Compiles and organizes the trial court records and exhibits for submission to the appellate court; ensures all necessary documents and evidence are included in the appellate record.
- Conducts analysis of lower court decisions and identifies potential grounds for appeal; assists in developing appellate strategies and outline of key arguments.
- Monitors the status of appellate cases and keeps clients informed of the status and progress of the case; tracks case progress, reports updates on appellate court rulings and advises of any next steps.
- Provides the highest level of confidentiality one may be exposed to in the performance of essential job functions.
- Maintains cases files and documentation; organizes and maintains case records and trial files; hard copy and electronic files and records, databases, and documents related to assigned projects.
- Operates a computer with database, spreadsheet, and word processing software in the performance of essential job functions.
- Operates an automobile in the performance of essential job functions.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES : None.
Minimum Qualifications, Additional Requirements and Supervisory Responsibilities
These knowledge, skills, and abilities are usually, although not always, acquired through completion of college-level coursework in Paralegal studies or related area; three (3) years of litigation experience as a paralegal, conducting legal research, case preparation, or related area. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.

Health Insurance (medical, dental, vision) -The City pays the eintire cost of employee only health insurance for the base plan. Higher levels of health coverage and dependent coverage is available at the employee's option; the City pays part of the cost of this additional coverage.
Life Insurance - The City pays the total cost of employee life insurance. Amount of coverage is one to three times salary, based on job classification.
Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) - The City pays the total cost for employee AD&D. Amount of coverage is one times salary.
Long-Term Disability - The City pays the total cost of long-term disability insurance. Amount of coverage is 60% of salary.
Retirement - Our 401a pension plan requires contributions by both the City and the employee.
Paid Time Off
Paid Time Off (PTO) Leave may be used for vacation, personal illness, funeral Leave / attendance, illness of a family member or other personal business.
Generous leave accruals with carry over capability.
Short-Term Disability Leave
Short-Term Disability (STD) can be used for extended personal illness requiring the employee to be absent more than three (3) days (with acceptable medical documentation).
All full-time non-uniformed non-union eligible employees earn STD at the rate of six (6) days per year.
After five (5) years of service, an employee will receive 2% of the STD account (maximum 1,000 hours) per years of service, upon termination of employment.
Longevity
Longevity pay will be paid at the rate of $4 per month for each year of service up to and including the fifth (5th) year and $6 per month for each year of service beginning at six (6) years and for each year thereafter.
