Heavy Equipment Operators - Streets and Stormwater
Position Summary
Under general supervision, operates a variety of equipment in the construction, maintenance, and repair of public works facilities, grounds, streets, and infrastructure.

Valid Class B CDL Driver’s License is required.
Additional certifications may be required depending on area of assignment.
Starting Salary:
$46,178 annually. Step increase after successful six month probation.

- Operates a variety of heavy equipment to include dump truck, front end loader, skid steer, forklift, and crack sealer;
- Participates in mowing, trimming, and spraying weeds, grass, trees, and shrubs around assigned areas; removes brush, litter, and debris; may paint curbs and cover graffiti.
- Assists with setting up and breaking down special events; prepares and places signage, traffic control devices, equipment, and decorations.
- Cleans, inspects, and performs routine preventative maintenance on tools, vehicles, equipment, and machinery.
When assigned to Utilities:
- Replaces residential and commercial water meters and meter boxes; locates and repairs water and wastewater service mains and installs new services and lateral lines; inspects City well sites and records well pump usage; collects water samples; monitors and repairs City sewer lift stations; replaces and repairs water pumps, motors, valves, and other parts as needed.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned.
Job Requirements
Knowledge of –
- Materials, tools, and equipment used in public works maintenance and repair work.
- Work safety policies, procedures, practices, and equipment.
- Various types of equipment and proper uses.
- Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and safety regulations.
- Record keeping, report preparation, filing methods, and records.
- General office policies and procedures; computers and general office equipment.
Skill in –
- Operating a variety of machinery, tools, and equipment safely.
- Working efficiently both independently and as part of a team.
- Reading and interpreting maps and blueprints.
- Organizing work and setting priorities to meet deadlines.
- Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Preparing accurate reports and statements.
- Establishing and maintaining strong working relationships.
Required Experience and Training:
High school diploma or GED equivalent and two (2) years of experience operating heavy equipment; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Required Certificates and Licenses:

Work is performed at work sites and requires exposure to extreme weather conditions, potentially dangerous tools, equipment, and machinery, and hazardous chemicals. Operates a variety of heavy and light maintenance equipment, such as City trucks and vehicles, mowers, saws, trimmers, and backhoes, and standard office equipment such as personal computer and related software, fax machine, and copy machine.
