Job Description:
Summer is almost here and the City of Livingston Recreation Department is now recruiting for experienced summer, seasonal, short-term lifeguards and swim instructors! The principal function of an employee is this class II is to ensure patron safety at the aquatic facilities and provide aquatics programs instruction. The work is performed under the supervision and direction of the assigned supervisor but considerable leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative. The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class establishes and maintains effective working relationships with their assigned manager, supervisor, members of community groups, school officials, other City employees, and the general public. This position will report to the Pool Manager and the Recreation Director.

Tentative Schedule:
Start dates and training will begin the week of May 27, 2025 to June 8, 2025.
The City Pool is scheduled to operate June 9, 2025 through August 15, 2025. Pools hours are normally 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. each day. Your scheduled hours will be within this time frame. Must be available for most of the summer season.
Rate of Pay: The compensation for this position is $16.00 - $18.00 per hour depending on years of prior lifeguarding, swim instruction and/or Certified Pool Operator experience.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
· Lifeguard, CPR, First Aid, and AED certified or become certified upon hire.
· Thorough knowledge of stabilization of victims with spinal cord injuries and other life threatening injuries.
· Thorough knowledge of proper aquatic teaching techniques in all ages and levels of ability.
· Thorough knowledge of swimming and lifeguarding techniques.
· Some knowledge of, or ability to quickly learn about the community and recreation programs;
· Ability to swim at an American Red Cross Level four.
· Ability to properly perform pool rescues.
· Ability to work independently, solve complex problems, and troubleshoot concerns while maintaining positive relationships.
· Knowledge of or ability to learn pool water chemistry and testing.
Essential Functions
· Opens and/or closes facilities.
- Performs life-saving and guarding duties, including assisting patrons in life threatening situations, enforcing pool rules and regulations for the efficient and safe operation of the aquatic facilities, providing active accident prevention, and monitoring patrons in the water.
- Possess lifeguard rescue skills, patron surveillance ability, injury prevention awareness, and facility safety recognition.
- Provides aquatics programs instruction to patrons, including composing lesson plans, demonstrating proper stroke techniques and awareness, ensuring safety of children and adults by watching for potential hazards and dangerous situations, and teaching water safety and pool rules.
- Provides customer service, including answering questions, referring customers to other agencies or organizations when necessary, accepting payment for passes, parties, lessons, and programs, answering phones and directing calls, and registering patrons for programs.
- Maintains a clean and safe swimming facility, including cleaning locker rooms, lobby area, pool deck, and restrooms, and ensuring pool, equipment room, and pool deck are clear of potentially dangerous objects or situations;
- Tests and monitors chemical balance in water and changes to water chemistry as directed.
- Provides needed information and demonstrations concerning how to perform certain work tasks to new employees in the same or similar class of positions.
- Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems.
- Attends meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on principles, practices, and new developments in assigned work areas.
- Responds to citizens' questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner.
- Communicates and coordinates regularly with appropriate others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities;
- Ability to instruct individuals on pool and water safety;
· Ability to quickly learn how to accurately operate a point-of-sale and pass registration computer program and other standard software.
· Ability to enforce rules and regulations firmly and with tact.
· Ensures safe and proper operation of the pool complex by conducting daily cleaning, routine inspections and initiating repair calls and/or maintenance in partnership with the City of Livingston Parks Department.
· Attends regular safety and emergency training with throughout the season.
· Keeps open communication with the patrons of the pool and coworkers throughout their shift by walking the deck and interacting with patrons with tact and discretion.
· Provides accurate and reliable written reports on all incidents, injuries, and pool rescues to include findings and recommendations.
· Swim Instructor skills will include:
o Swimming and safety skills for aquatics
o Fun and educational swim lesson experiences for children and parents
o Observe rules of training
o Follow provided swim instruction curriculum
· Performs other related duties as assigned or as needed.
Requirements:
· We are looking for candidates who can commit to working the entire season, June through August.
· Minimum age requirement is 15 years old.
· Must be reliable, dependable, confident, and energetic.
· Swim instructor requirements includes prior years of experience working with children/youth which could include teachers, coaches, child care providers.
· Prior Aquatics or Lifeguarding experience is required
· Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written policies, procedures, and instructions;
· Satisfactory completion of a Swim Test.
· Must possess or be willing to obtain with the help of the employer prior to the summer season opening:
o Current Lifeguard Training (LGT) Certification to include being able to swim proficiently.
o Current First-Aid, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
· Must pass background checks.
Physical Requirements:
This work is considered light-to-medium in nature and involves walking or standing virtually all of the time. This work involves exerting up to 20 pounds of force or lifting on a regular basis and up to 50 pounds occasionally. Must be able to perform pool water rescue with assistance. Ability to maintain physical endurance and stamina. Work regularly requires speaking or hearing and use of hands and/or fingers to carry, lift, handle, or feel, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling, lifting, and repetitive motions. Work requires frequent standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, sitting, and crawling. Work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.
Working Conditions:
Swim uniforms are provided. This work has exposure to environmental conditions and is primarily performed outside. These conditions may include bright or dim light and sunlight, wet and/or humid conditions, dust, pollen, smoke and other outdoor air situations. This position also involves exposure to pool chemicals during pool water testing. Water and sunscreen is provided daily for employees.
