THIS POSITION IS A PART-TIME, NON-BUDGETED POSITION,
WORKING VARIOUS HOURS, DEPENDING ON OPERATIONAL NEEDS.
INCUMBENT WORKS APPROXIMATELY 10-19 HOURS PER WEEK.
Under general supervision, this position perform a variety of clerical library duties, within well-defined standards; to assist the public in the use of a branch library and library equipment, facilities, materials and services; and to perform other specifically related work as required.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS: The incumbent performs a variety of routine library duties gained through on-the-job training and gradually receives responsibility for full range of duties, including assisting the public in the use of a branch library and library equipment, facilities, materials and services; performs some clerical duties; and performs other specifically related work as required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
The following duties are typical of this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices
Performs a variety of routine library work, including tasks in the areas of circulation and reference, circulating library materials, shelving materials; performs safety check of bookmobile and makes sure it is clean and fueled prior to departure; maintains control and care of library bookmobile; checking materials in and out; locates and recommends books, answers basic reference questions in absence of a professional librarian; performs responsible library clerical tasks; assists with seasonal and on-going programs and activities; assists in preparing and conducting story times and other children’s programming; assists library patrons at circulation desks, checking library materials in and out, maintaining circulation records and answering routine location questions; issues library cards to patrons; performs a variety of general clerical and library duties specific to the department to which assigned; drives the bookmobile; and performs related work as required.
TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS

LICENSE/CERTIFICATES REQUIRED: Possession of a valid and appropriate California Driver’s License and clean record.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Experience working with an automated system for service delivery in a public library circulation area or one year working in a fast-paced customer service position is highly desirable. One (1) year full-time library experience, AND Associate’s degree or possession of a Certificate of Proficiency in Library Technology from an accredited institution is desirable.
KNOWLDEGE OF: Safe and defensive driving skills; Modern office equipment and procedures; Basic computer use and basic computer applications; English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation; Basic mathematical skills; Excellent customer service principles and practices; Principles and procedures of recordkeeping
ABILITY TO: Learn library services, functions, and policies; Learn and master the use of an Integrated Library System (ILS); Operate a vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices; Patiently assist patrons with use of a library; Maintain behavior guidelines and order among patrons using a library; Read and write at the level requires for a successful job performance; Type at a rate required for successful job performance; Perform and maintain a wide variety of library-related records; Understand and carry out oral and written instructions; Establish and maintain effective relationship with those contacted in the course of work.

PHYSICAL: Strength: Medium - Exert force of 20-50 pounds occasionally, 10-25 pounds frequently, or up to 10 pounds constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or move objects. Frequently stand or walk, bend, push/pull, twist at the waist, handle, grip, grasp, finger/type, extend neck upward, downward or side to side. Occasionally sit, stoop, crouch, reach above, at or below shoulder level. Rarely crawl, kneel, climb stairs. Vision: visual acuity sufficient to perform the essential functions of the position; average depth perception needed. Hearing: Hearing ability to effectively hear and comprehend oral instructions and communication.

- At-Will designation refers to full-time employees in certain classifications and all part-time, temporary employees. The unclassified, non-budgeted employee is at-will, has no probationary period, and may be rejected at any time without cause and without the right of appeal.
- Part-time, temporary appointments are "at-will" assignments, not subject to the competitive service process, and serve at the direction and discretion of the assigned department.
- Part-time, temporary appointments are not eligible to receive vacation, holidays, or any other benefits provided to budgeted, regular status employees.
- Part-time, temporary appointments, including PT PERS are eligible to accrue paid sick leave up to 5 days or 40 hours of accrued paid sick leave per year. Any accrued sick leave cannot be cashed out upon termination. (PT Retiree Annuitants are not eligible to accrue paid sick leave.)
- Part-time, temporary appointments can be made for a period of up to 19 hours per week and cannot exceed 1,000 hours worked within one fiscal year without prior approval.
