Building Maintenance Worker

EXAMINATION PROCESS:  Based upon screening of the City application, résumé, and responses to supplemental questions, applicants whose qualifications best meet the requirements of the position will be invited to the examination process.  This process may include, but is not limited to: written examination, panel interview and/or performance examination, which consists of an evaluation of some of the essential knowledge, skills, abilities, and job related experience listed below. Those candidates who pass the examination process are placed on an eligibility list from which the final selection will be made.  

SELECTION PROCESS:  As authorized by City policy, applicants being considered for hire in this position are subject to fingerprinting for purposes of investigating criminal history background, as part of the employment screening process.  Appointment is subject to successful completion of a pre-employment medical examination (based upon job-related physical standards) by a City-designated physician.

Failure in any one part of the examination or selection processes will disqualify a candidate from further consideration.

 

Assists in the construction, maintenance and repair of public buildings and facilities; lifts and move heavy objects; performs other manual labor necessary to the completion of jobs; assists trades workers by performing unskilled tasks; cleans, maintains, and stores tools used on the job; performs a wide variety of semi-skilled work in the maintenance of mechanical and electrical equipment; assists in regular inspections, making necessary preventive maintenance adjustments; assists in lubrication of equipment to keep equipment in good working condition; operates light equipment, such as trucks and compressors; learns to perform routine carpentry, painting, masonry and electrical work on buildings, including roof and floor repairs.

PERIPHERAL FUNCTIONS: All Levels:  Loads and unloads supplies.
 

 

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Building Maintenance Worker:  One (1) year of experience in general maintenance and/or construction.  Additional experience in a construction trade is desirable.

LICENSE REQUIRED: Possession of a valid and appropriate California Driver's License. 

 

KNOWLEDGE OF: 

 

PHYSICAL: Strength category: Heavy-exert force of 50-100 pounds occasionally, or 25-50 pounds frequently or 10-20 pounds constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or move objects. Occasional standing, walking, sitting, bending, stooping, crouching, crawling, kneeling, pushing, pulling, twisting at the waist, handling, gripping grasping, climbing stairs and ladders, reaching at, above and below shoulder level, extension of neck upward, downward and side to side. On rare occasion, climbs scaffolding, engages in fingering and typing. Vision: Visual acuity which can be corrected sufficiently to perform the essential functions of the position; average depth perception needed. Hearing: Effectively hear/comprehend oral instructions and communication and equipment.

MENTAL/PSYCHOLOGICAL: Work cooperatively and interact appropriately with those contacted in the course of work, including the general public; read/comprehend complex materials; utilize complex math skills; utilize simple writing skills; understand, remember and carry out detailed but not complex job instructions; respond quickly to changing situations under emergency pressures; communicate effectively orally; work under pressure; work within deadlines; train other workers.

 

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors. Occasionally works around machinery and uses a computer. Occasional exposure to dust, fumes, gases and odors, excessive noises, solvents, grease or oil, slippery or uneven walking surfaces, flames or smoke. On rare occasion exposed to extreme temperatures, electrical energy. Works both alone and with others.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Employees in this classification may be required to work evenings, weekends and be called back for emergencies.

 

Employees in this classification may be required to utilize respirators in the course of their job duties or under emergency circumstances, and thus must be in compliance with General Industry Safety Order 5144. Employees shall not wear beards, mustaches, sideburns, facial hair or other conditions in such a manner that may prevent or interfere with establishing and maintaining a proper seal of the respirator face-mask. This requirement is implemented in order to insure the safety and health of the employee.
