The Electrical-Mechanical Technician series specification describes four classifications, under supervision, performs a variety of skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled electrical, mechanical, preventive maintenance and repair duties in a Wastewater Treatment Plant; and perform other specifically related work as required. Positions in these classes learn to perform electrical, instrumentation, and mechanical technical work related to the construction, preventive maintenance, maintenance, troubleshooting, modification and repair of electrical and mechanical equipment.
Electrical-Mechanical Technician I: $5,493 - $6,923 per month
Electrical-Mechanical Technician II: $5,752 - $7,253 per month
(May be hired at either I or II level, depending on current certification and experience qualifications)
Electrical-Mechanical I: Perform semi-skilled and skilled technical duties.
Electrical-Mechanical Technician II: Journey-level, perform semi-skilled, skilled, and specialized maintenance; sometimes directing the work of others.
EXAMINATION PROCESS: Based upon screening of the City application, résumé, certification, and responses to supplemental questions, applicants whose qualifications best meet the requirements of the position will be invited to the examination process. This process may include, but is not limited to: written examination, performance examination and/or panel interview, which consists of an evaluation of some of the essential knowledge, skills, abilities, and job-related experience listed below. Those candidates who pass the examination process are placed on an eligibility list from which the final selection will be made.
SELECTION PROCESS: As authorized by City policy, applicants being considered for hire in this position shall be subject to fingerprinting for purposes of investigating criminal history background. In addition, appointment shall be subject to successful completion of a pre-employment medical examination (based upon job-related physical standards) by a City-designated physician.
Failure in any one part of the examination or selection processes will disqualify a candidate from further consideration.
The following duties are typical of this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the duties and/or may be required to perform specific additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
All Levels: Learn to perform and performs preventive and predictive maintenance, repair and calibration of hydraulic, electrical and pneumatic equipment; inspects, troubleshoots, and repairs mechanical defects on pumps, motors and equipment found in a wastewater treatment plant facility using a variety of techniques, including welding; cleans, paints, removes rust and makes repairs on pipes and concrete; complies with all applicable safety practices, rules and regulations; uses a variety of job related computer programs; conducts preventive maintenance and testing programs as directed; repairs and maintains mechanical equipment, such as pumps, compressors, blowers, compaction units, hoists, mixers, and valves; performs preventive and predictive maintenance; maintains records of repairs and preventive maintenance; repairs watering systems, plastic piping, automatic valves, motor control centers and any related electrical-mechanical equipment; and may perform related work as required.
In addition to above, Electrical-Mechanical Technician II: Installs, modifies and repairs electrical and instrumentation equipment; performs preventive maintenance; troubleshoots and inspects electrical instrumentation and mechanical systems; maintains records of repairs and preventive maintenance; and direct the work of assigned helpers.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Electrical Mechanical Technician I: One year of experience performing electrical/mechanical maintenance at a wastewater treatment plant or equivalent and high school diploma or GED.
- Electrical Mechanical Technician II: Three years experience performing electrical/mechanical maintenance at a wastewater treatment plant or equivalent and high school diploma or GED.
CERTIFICATION REQUIRED:
- Electrical Mechanical Technician I: Possession of a valid Grade I Plant Maintenance Certification issued by the California Water Environment Association at time of appointment/hire or obtains Grade I Plant Maintenance Certification no later than three test periods after appointment/hire.
- Electrical-Mechanical Technician II: Possession of, or ability to obtain within three test periods after appointment/hire, a valid Grade II Plant Maintenance Mechanical Technologist Certification issued by the California Water Environment Association.
LICENSE REQUIRED: Possession of an appropriate California Driver's License is required.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Employees in this classification may be required to utilize respirators in the course of their job duties or under emergency circumstances, and thus must be in compliance with General Industry Safety Order 5144. Employees may be required to shave or shall not wear beards, mustaches, sideburns, facial hair or other conditions in such a manner that may prevent or interfere with establishing and maintaining a proper seal of the respirator facemask. This requirement is implemented in order to insure the safety and health of the employee.
MANDATORY ADVANCEMENT: With satisfactory job performance, career ladder advancement shall be effective the first pay period following presentation of proof of possession of the appropriate certification, satisfaction of time and experience requirements and appropriate approvals.
