What are the responsibilities and job description for the Community Safety Officer position at City of Lone Tree?
The purpose of this position is to utilize specially trained, non-sworn personnel to perform some duties performed by sworn Police personnel. This is accomplished by responding to and processing low priority calls, communicating via radio, writing case reports and traffic accidents, operating a vehicle safely in routine situation, maintaining reference and information of basic state statutes, municipal ordinances and department procedures, and performing additional duties and responsibilities while providing field training for other community service officers and volunteers and assisting records technicians as needed. Other duties include identifying vehicle number verification and inspecting child passenger safety seats.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
- Respond to and investigate low priority calls for service which include:
Vehicle trespassing, thefts, damage to property, abandoned vehicles, traffic accidents, burglary (non-dwelling), complete investigations and case reports, assist with traffic control, assist with special events, parking enforcement, and routine non-enforcement patrolling
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- One year of working with the public and operating computer equipment and driving a vehicle.
- Must have the ability to operate a variety of standard office equipment, e.g. copier, fax machine and personal computer.
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle

- Math: Intermediate - Ability to deal with system of real numbers; practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios/proportions and measurement. Ordinarily, such education is obtained in high school up to college. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study.
- Writing: Intermediate - Ability to write reports; prepare business letters, expositions, and summaries with proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar, using all parts of speech. Ordinarily, such education is obtained in high school up to college. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study.
- Human Collaboration Skills: Decisions regarding implementation of policies may be made. Contact may involve support of controversial positions or the negotiation of sensitive issues or important presentations. Contacts may involve stressful, negative interactions with the public requiring high levels of tact and the ability to respond to aggressive interpersonal interactions.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Three years law enforcement experience (sworn or non-sworn) or currently enrolled in a Criminal Justice or similar field of study at an accredited college or university.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
- High School Diploma or GED, Licensed Colorado Driver
EQUIPMENT USED, WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:
Driving: Must be physically capable of operating motor vehicles safely in the normal course of assignments.
Office equipment: Daily use of a copier, scanner, and printer.
Computer equipment: Daily use of a personal computer, MS Office software, GIS software.
Other equipment: Periodic use of large format printers and copiers.
Language skills: Reads, analyzes, and interprets technical journals, financial reports, and legal document; writes technical and professional reports and correspondence and using proper spelling, grammar, and style; presents information and responds to questions from top management, citizens and large groups.
Mathematical skills: Performs intermediate mathematical calculations
Reasoning ability: Defines problems, collects data, establishes facts, and draws valid conclusions using a variety of abstract and concrete variables.
Physical activities: May sit, walk, stand, bend, stoop, reach, climb, carry and lift for varying periods.

Vision and hearing: Must have visual acuity to see and read paper and electronic documents; must be able to answer telephones, communicate conversation and respond to verbal inquiries.
Exposure to environmental conditions: Work in office setting and outside field work is required.
Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
The Lone Tree Police Department’s business hours are 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. This position may work a variety of shifts ranging from 6:00 AM to 12:00 AM, depending on departmental needs.
Salary : $25 - $30
