DESCRIPTION
THE DEPARTMENT
The mission of Public Works is to provide outstanding City-wide services improving the quality of life for the community while being responsible stewards of the city's physical assets. Public Works does this through a customer service lens with specialized skills, innovation, and responsiveness. Core services include, preserving and enhancing the city's infrastructure, transportation systems, streets, sidewalks, and urban forest. The Department has six bureaus : Business Operations, Traffic and Mobility, Engineering, Environmental Services, Public Services and Project Management. The bureaus jointly manage the collection of refuse and recycling, manage capital projects, manage the City's stormwater systems, review and issue permits, provide emergency response, and safely and efficiently manage and maintain the city's public right of way and public facilities. The Department has over 580 budgeted positions with an annual operating budget of $250 million and an annual capital improvement program budget of $150 million. THE POSITION
The Department of Public Works is seeking one (1) Plumber (Non-Career) to support the Department by performing journey-level work in the installation, alteration and repair of water, heating and drainage systems in buildings, pump stations, structures and facilities in accordance with the California Plumbing Code of Regulations Title 24 Part 5.
Non-Career employees are allowed a maximum of 1,600 work hours available over a 12-month period, and are considered temporary, at-will employees who are not typically eligible for benefits. However, non-career employees may qualify for health coverage and sick leave accruals subject to applicable federal and state provisions.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Assembles, installs and repairs pipes, fittings and fixtures for water and waste disposal systems and gas, steam, air and water heating systems.
Connects water and gas heaters, furnaces, appliances and other fixtures.
Inspects and tests systems for malfunctions and determines extent and estimated cost of necessary repairs.
Replaces or repairs and adjusts valves and other fittings.
Observes safety rules.
Keeps simple records and makes reports.
Performs other related duties as required.
