The Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine, Marine Bureau, is seeking energetic and enthusiastic candidates interested in applying for a Marine Aide (Non-Career) position. There are currently two (2) part-time vacancies. These positions may assist in the Alamitos Bay Marina, Long Beach Shoreline Marina, and Rainbow Harbor Marina locations. Additional vacancies may be added. Assignments can vary, depending on the needs of the department. These positions typically work up to 28 hours per week, including various hours and shifts. WEEKENDS AND HOLIDAYS ARE MANDATORY.

This recruitment may be used to fill future vacancies in the same grade and classification. 

The Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine is a nationally recognized and award-winning organization with 1,100 full-time/part-time staff and a budget of $85 million. The Department oversees facilities and programs that reflect the needs and interests of a culturally diverse community, including: 170 parks with more than 3,200 acres devoted to open space and recreation, 27 community centers, 3 public pools, 6 miles of beaches, and 3 marinas.
 
The Long Beach climate and waterfront conditions are second to none, since the City of Long Beach is located on the coast of Southern California and has near shore waters protected by a series of breakwaters. The Department's Marine Bureau has many wonderful waterfront assets to offer to our visitors. The Marine Bureau manages over 3,200 boat slips in three marinas, as well as a thriving commercial harbor that provides many enjoyable on-water activities. In addition, the Bureau manages 11 miles of recreational beach and waterfront, five launch ramp facilities, a rowing/water-skiing facility, a public pier, beach restrooms, waterfront landscaping, playgrounds, and many other recreational opportunities.

Non-Career employees are allowed a maximum of 1,600 work hours available over a 12-month period, and are considered temporary, at-will employees who are not typically eligible for benefits. However, non-career employees may qualify for health coverage and sick leave accruals subject to applicable federal and state provisions.This position performs a variety of marina, office-related duties for recreational and commercial boats and boat owners, and includes the following responsibilities:

  • Provides assistance and information to marina customers in-person, on the phone, and via email.
  • Issues parking passes and keys.
  • Processes boat slip reservations for visiting vessels.
  • Calculates and collects fees from boat owners.
  • Processes insurance certificates.
  • Assists field staff with marina-related inspections and boat checks.
  • Assists with marina marketing efforts and the coordination and preparation of special events.
  • Interprets, applies, and explains policies, regulations, codes, and procedures related to slips, moorings, and dock structures.
  • Monitors launch ramps and beach parking lots.
  • Operates marina equipment, such as small watercraft, hoists, and pumpouts.
  • Handles issues and inquiries concerning marina slips and structures.
  • Drives a City vehicle on limited occasions between marinas and to run miscellaneous errands, such as mail drop-off.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license.
  • One year of experience working with the public in a customer service setting.
  • Able to work up to 28 hours per week including weekends and holidays.
  • Proficiency of Microsoft Word is required.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Knowledge of Excel and Outlook email.
  • Marina or other public recreation facility experience is highly desirable.
The successful candidate will possess the following:
  • Strong customer service and administrative skills.
  • Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple assignments and priorities within a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment in carrying out responsibilities.
  • Ability to display a professional demeanor, be flexible when necessary, and be an effective team member.
  • Willingness to work various hours, shifts, weekends, and holidays.
