Definition

Act as first responder to mental health emergency calls for service with Public Safety personnel (interdisciplinary team including a paramedicine professional and a law enforcement Officer). Provide primary de-escalation tactics and clinical crisis interventions to high-risk, high-acuity behavioral health emergencies. Provide expert clinical judgement in the field to inform police and paramedicine action and provide the most appropriate intervention at the time of Public Safety contact. The CORE Clinician engages in dynamic field contacts that can be rapidly changing and require immediate evaluation and intervention. CORE Clinicians can be responsible for resource navigation, preparing legal documents for transport to appropriate levels of care, including mental health holds, court ordered psychiatric evaluations, emergency

commitments, and involuntary commitment petitions (court ordered substance use treatment). Expectation is to rely upon community resources and engagement to facilitate health and increase continuity of care. Will serve as a liaison to other community serving agencies. The Co Responder program is a flexible, dynamic system that will adapt to the community's needs.

Principal Duties

  • Respond to behavioral health calls for service with other Public Safety personnel ( e.g., law enforcement, fire and paramedicine professionals) and provide clinical crisis intervention services, biopsychosocial evaluations, problem identification, scaffolding of skills, and referrals to appropriate resources. Responsible for brokering of services for clients in order to have a robust referral network that attends to the needs of our client population.
  • Engage in follow-up care (within 72-hours) to help build relationships, solidify skill building, and advocacy for ongoing services.
  • Execute appropriate mental health holds (to include M1 and M3), if applicable.
  • Occasionally responsible for providing short-term case management.
  • Maintain accurate and timely clinical records.
  • Participate in team/department meetings, in-service trainings, clinical supervision and supervisory sessions as required.
  • Perform outreach activities to members of our community that are struggling with behavioral health concerns.
  • Perform training activities and engage in outreach events to inform community at large of CORE service offering
  • Broker services with community agencies and stakeholders to ensure appropriate service offerings for community members in need.
  • Transport clients as needed to appropriate destinations.
  • Collaborate with other case management staff and agencies to support client progress.

Working Environment

Operating out of a police vehicle with other team members including an assigned CORE Officer and Paramedic, to emergencies in the local area. Including but not limited to; Active Shootings, stabbings, major traffic accidents (fatal), menacing, SWAT team calls, armed suicidal calls, child abuse, domestic violence, serious medical emergencies, infectious disease exposure risk (scabies, bed bugs, hepatitis, etc.) narcotics related calls (overdose) and many other. Wear tactical/ Bullet-Proof body armor during shift due to inherent safety risks in responding to 911 emergencies with police officers. Actively utilize "scene safety" and personal safety (defensive tactics) training tools to maintain physical safety amidst 911 emergencies (often in unpredictable environments). Initial and follow-up contacts will occur in a variety of community environments including homes, emergency rooms, community partners, jail settings, parks, greenways etc.

Often works off site and in the community, including homes, community agency sites, hospital emergency rooms, psychiatric units, nursing homes, jails and juvenile detention facilities. General office environment. Regularly works with people in acute distress or crisis. May require travel to several sites throughout Boulder County to attend meetings. Co Responder Clinicians are stationed at the Longmont Department of Public Safety.

Qualifications

Minimum of two years' experience in clinical settings with experience performing clinical crisis interventions. Master’s degree in social work, psychology, or similar field. Current license as a LSW/LPCC in the State of Colorado. Special Qualifications: Bilingual (English/Spanish) Intermediate/Advanced proficiency preferred. Must have valid Colorado Driver’s License and good driving record.
