This is an entry level position with the purpose of acquiring the training and experience to become a Professional/Registered Sanitarian. Inspects and permits the City's food establishments; Responds to public health inquiries and complaints from the public; assists Senior Inspectors with investigations of alleged health code violations and reports of food borne illnesses; prepares and maintains a variety of health inspection records and documentation; assists with public education regarding food safety; and performs and assists with other related duties.

Provides for the enforcement of the City's food ordinances and State public health laws. Coordinates and performs inspections of various types of food establishments. Monitors and ensures food establishments are properly permitted and operating in accordance with applicable health and safety requirements. Inspects and permits temporary events involving food service providers. Responds to and investigates public health complaints against food establishments and hotels. Documents health violations and communicates necessary corrective action to food establishment owners/managers; issues citations as warranted. Performs follows up inspections to ensure appropriate compliance by food establishments. Assists in investigations of reported food borne illnesses and diseases. Able to communicate a variety of information to a broad audience. Prepares and files court cases; provides court testimony as required. Assists in reviews and monitoring of food establishment building plans for regulatory compliance. Assists in educational sessions on food safety and/or other environmental health topics. Prepares and maintains a variety of health inspection records, reports, and documentation. Performs other related duties as assigned or required.Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Health, Biology, or a related field with a minimum of 30 accredited college hours in science. The ability to take and pass the State Sanitarian exam within 6 months of employment. Must possess a valid Texas Driver's License.Work is performed primarily in the field and in and around food establishments. Subject to sitting, standing, walking, bending, reaching, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting of objects up to 50 pounds. Exposure to variable weather conditions, general kitchen hazards, machinery with moving parts, extreme noise, hazardous chemicals, and potentially irate members of the public is involved.
