What are the responsibilities and job description for the Traffic Technician Apprentice position at City of Longview?
Serves in a training capacity to observe, learn and assist experienced Traffic Technicians and the Traffic Engineer in a variety of skilled technical work in the inspection, installation, maintenance and repair of traffic signal and control devices for the Public Works Department (PWD).
Observes and assists in the installation, inspection, maintenance and repair of traffic signal devices. This may, include control cabinets, traffic signals, detectors, actuators, intersection controls, signal transmitters, and other electrical and electronic systems in accordance with City standards and the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). Acquires knowledge and experience observing and assisting with repair, replacement, and troubleshooting damaged or malfunctioning traffic signal equipment in the field; assists with testing devices and making necessary repairs; assists with testing and programing microprocessor- based controllers and conflict monitors. Assists in performing preventive maintenance inspections; studies blueprints and schematics to acquire knowledge in determining the accuracy or malfunction of traffic signal equipment by use of testing devices. Assists in maintaining necessary records of inspection, installation, maintenance and repairs of traffic signal and alert/warning devices; assists with completion of daily work log, incident and accident reports. Uses computer aided graphics software applications to create traffic sign design and lettering. Designs and fabricates standard and customized signs in accordance with City standards and the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). Operates, maintains and cleans traffic equipment. Manages sign shop inventory, and orders paint, materials, parts and supplies. Assists with street striping and pavement markings, and maintains equipment. Creates specialty signs and decals for City departments. Prepares cost estimates for special projects and damage recovery. Maintains necessary records of installation, location, maintenance and repairs of traffic signs and devices; completes daily work log, incident and accident reports. Follows all safety rules and regulations on the job site. Operates equipment in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures; identifies and reports mechanical problems requiring additional repair. Responds to questions from residents and provides information and customer service; Assists in the response to emergencies and coordinates work activities as needed. Performs other related duties as assigned or required.
High School Diploma or GED equivalent. Must possess a valid Texas Driver’s License. Must be capable of acquiring an International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Level I Traffic Signal Technician Certification. Must be capable of acquiring Sign and Pavement Marking Level I certification from IMSA.
Work is performed indoors in a shop environment and outdoors in City traffic; required to perform moderate physical work, and lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
