Overview
Under general supervision, performs skilled manual labor in determining the location of underground utilities and maintenance and repair to various public works operations projects. Which include repair and cleaning of utility lines, installation and replacement of water meters, street maintenance includes: street cleaning, paint striping and patching. Will use electronic locating equipment and GPS equipment to locate and collect data points related to the City of Louisville's infrastructure, including water distribution system, sanitary sewer, and stormwater collection system. An employee in this position will primarily be responsible for performing all locate requests in a timely manner while secondary responsibilities include reporting to their supervisor and being available to finish their day doing other tasks related to the general duties of the division. May operate a variety of light duty trucks, dump trucks, tractors, backhoes, street sweepers and front-end loaders. Work assignments are usually provided orally and the work is reviewed while in progress or upon completion. Locator position will be assigned a 2025 Ford Lightning and updated, newly purchased locating equipment. Performs other work as required

Examples of Duties
- Locates water, sewer, stormwater and City owned fiber using tablet device in field
- Responds quickly to locate requests from all sources including UNCC, Utility Notification Center of Colorado
- Prioritizes work in an efficient manner
- Marks City assets according to the UNCC color standards with paint, stakes and or whiskers
- Operates street sweepers, light duty trucks and dump trucks, tractors, front-end loaders, backhoes, and snowplows in the performance of operations maintenance and construction projects and assignments
- Loads and hauls fill rock, asphalt, and other road patch materials
- Applies asphalt patches, asphalt overlay, sets concrete forms, and performs other street and construction repairs and maintenance functions
- Installs and repairs new and existing utility and service lines
- Operates or assists in the operation of monitoring equipment; clears utility lines and/or repairs breaks in the lines; seals manholes; uses high pressure hoses to clean sewers
- Plows and removes snow from City right-of-ways during and after snowstorms
- Performs routine and preventative maintenance on various equipment that may include checking temperature, greasing, checking oil levels, cleaning and painting
- Installs and/or replaces water meters of all sizes
- Repairs and maintains fire hydrants
- Performs preventative maintenance and minor adjustments on equipment prior to, during, and after operating
- Acts as a flag person to guide and direct traffic at construction and repair sites
- Read water meters with automatic meter reading equipment
General Qualifications
- One year experience working as a Locator
The following requirements are paid for by the City and provided as scheduling allows:
- CDL (B) or ability to obtain within 6 months from date of hire (DOH)
- Flagger certification or ability to obtain within 6 months from DOH
- Trench & Shoring Safety Certification or ability to obtain within 6 months from DOH
- First Aid/ CPR/ AED certified or ability to obtain within 6 months from DOH
- As an ambassador of the City provides excellent customer service
- Maintains detailed records of locates, time received, time completed, etc.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with different departments or contractors, or citizens
- Knowledge of occupational hazards, safety precautions, and traffic laws necessary to perform assigned work
- Knowledge of asphalt and concrete repair
- Knowledge of the operation and use of light duty vehicles and equipment
- Knowledge of the geography of the City of Louisville
- Knowledge of water and wastewater distribution and collection systems and/or knowledge in other related fields
- Skill in the safe operation of heavy equipment in rough, uneven, or slippery conditions
- Skill in the use of equipment necessary to maintain a water distribution and wastewater collection system
- Ability to understand and carry out both oral and written instructions
- Ability to inspect machinery and mechanical equipment in operation and to detect flaws and defects in operation
- Ability to work from and read sketches, maps, blueprints, diagrams, and charts
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow workers and the general public
- Ability to perform strenuous work in all types of weather conditions
- Ability to be on call, work nights, holidays, and weekends
- Ability to report to work within 35-40 minutes when on call

Additional Information
Work Environment:
The majority of the work is performed outdoors. The employee is exposed to hazardous traffic and weather conditions as well as hazardous construction sites. The employee may be exposed to fumes, airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals.
Physical Requirements:
While performing this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands, and fingers, to handle or feel objects or tools. The employee is regularly required to reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and read, speak and hear. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, climb or balance. Driving and operation of equipment may be for extended periods of time.
The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and sometimes up to 100 pounds with assistance. Specific vision abilities required by this job include color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
