This position is under the supervision of our Revenue & Tax Manager and will perform entry- to mid- level administrative duties. The Sales Tax Technician will process various tax returns, maintain records, assist taxpayers with questions, assist in monitoring delinquent accounts and carry out collection action, generate a variety of tax related reports and perform various administrative duties for the Tax Division.

- Process and review tax returns for accuracy and completeness, including sales tax, use tax, and other applicable City taxes and fees.
- Process tax returns submitted through the Colorado SUTS portal.
- Issue and input business licenses and annual renewals.
- Assist with initial use tax mailings and follow-up on delinquent accounts.
- Maintain and update tax records and databases with return and licensing data.
- Communicate daily with businesses regarding basic tax questions, licensing inquiries, and account issues.
- Provide back-up support to the Front Desk as needed.
- Provide support to the Sales & Licensing Division as needed.
- Work with the City Clerk's office to address customer licensing questions and finalize new account creation.
- Maintain current knowledge about business activity in the City to ensure compliance with City ordinances.
- Maintain current knowledge of applicable tax laws and regulations.
- Assist with identifying and resolving potential compliance issues.
- Notify the City Clerk of delinquent liquor and marijuana accounts.
- Keep direct supervisor informed about the status of active tax issues that may arise.
- Collaborate with other departments to ensure proper business compliance.
- Maintaining confidentiality and upholding the highest ethical standards.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- High School diploma or equivalent required.
- Two to three years of progressively responsible experience in accounting or bookkeeping, and administrative experience are required.
- Prefer a bachelor’s in accounting, Finance or Business related field but years of relevant experience will be considered in lieu of degree.
- Experience working in municipal government is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Excellent proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook) and other relevant software applications.
- Accuracy and speed in data entry and processing.
- Strong attention to detail with a focus on accuracy in all work, including calculations and data entry.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to research, analyze information, and effectively resolve tax-related challenges.
- Ability to analyze tax situations and identify solutions for businesses or communicate issues to supervisor.
- Ability to learn City and State Sales and Use Tax reporting requirements and collections processes.
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate with taxpayers, businesses, and colleagues.
- Strong customer service skills, including patience, empathy, and the ability to effectively address taxpayer inquiries and concerns.
Physical Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands, fingers, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and read, speak, or hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk and reach with hands and arms. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Daily use of computer, keyboard, copier, scanner, printer, calculator, phone (desk and cell). Daily use of software programs including Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook, Word, Excel, document management software, sales tax software, and ADG financial software.
Work Environment:
The work is performed indoors in a controlled office environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate. Position generally works in an office setting with overhead lighting and long periods of screen time.
