Summary
Receives, stores, and releases items in the police property room. Maintains records of items for the police property room.
Essential Functions
- Receive, store, record, and issue articles seized as evidence or recovered and found property;
- Prepare record of articles received including description of article, name of owner, and reason for retention;
- Record storage bin location number and tag item for retrieval;
- Issue property retained for evidence to the officer at the time of trial;
- Telephone property owners when identified and release stolen property to owners;
- Prepare reports for a number of items received and released;
- Move items to and from storage bins using hand truck as needed;
- Assist police officers or owners in loading and unloading property;
- Dispose of property following case disposition;
- Testify in criminal trials concerning evidence control;
- Perform related duties as required.
Qualifications
Completion of a high school diploma or the equivalent with an additional one to three years of experience maintaining records for storage or warehousing of materials of a sensitive nature; or any combination of relevant education and experience which provides the following:
Applicants for this position must pass a Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) fingerprint-based background check and maintain CJIS eligibility. Due to CJIS requirements related to system access, the following will result in being disqualified for this position: Felony convictions, Felony Deferred Adjudication, Class A & B Misdemeanor Deferred Adjudication, Class B Misdemeanor convictions, an Open Arrest for any criminal offense (Felony or Misdemeanor), and family violence convictions.

Knowledge of:
- Office practices; methods of properly receiving, storing, and issuing materials.
- Learn and apply practices to preserve the chain of evidence;
- Maintain accurate records;
- Exercise judgment in storing and issuing sensitive materials;
- Work effectively with the public, attorneys, and law enforcement personnel;
- Type 35 words per minute;
- Communicate effectively with others;
- Maintain confidence of the public, attorneys, and law enforcement personnel in the integrity of criminal evidence;
- Pass an extensive background investigation to receive security clearance;
- Exercise excellent judgment and responsibility in storing and issuing sensitive materials.
