Pay: $13.65/hour
DESCRIPTION
Performs all aspects of humane animal care duties to ensure animal safety and well-being and provides quality customer service by providing the public with assistance and accurate information regarding Animal Services' policies, programs, and procedures.
QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree or coursework in animal science, veterinary technology, or related field preferred.
- Previous experience working with animals in a shelter, veterinary clinic, or animal care facility preferred.
- Must possess a valid Driver's License Class C at time of placement.
- Must complete and pass Basic Certification Course required by Texas Department of Health and Euthanasia Certification within the first 6 months of employment.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of animal behavior, handling techniques, and basic animal care principles, with a commitment to providing compassionate and humane treatment to animals.
- Skills in excellent interpersonal communication, with the ability to interact professionally and courteously with diverse individuals, including staff, volunteers, animal owners, and the general public.
- Skills in basic computer usage and ability to learn shelter management software.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, physically demanding environment, including lifting and carrying animals, bending, stooping, and standing for extended periods.
- Ability to work in adverse weather conditions.
MAJOR DUTIES
- Cleans, disinfects, and maintains shelter area as assigned.
- Feeds, water, bathes, dips, and exercises animals. Provides humane sheltering services in compliance with State Minimum standards and shelter policies.
- Safely and humanely handle animals of unknown health and temperament.
- Assists in monitoring the medical/behavioral status of animals and performs related health care activities.
- Must be able to perform euthanasia as a function of shelter operations.
- Ensures the safety of animals and people in the shelter.
- Accurately maintains all required records in the shelter's database.
- Provides information to the public.
- Transfers animals between kennels and cages using proper handling procedures.
- Interface with the public and respond to citizen inquiries and concerns.
- May supervise the work assigned to community service workers.
- Other duties as assigned.
This position is an essential service position and will require providing services during emergency situations.
